In just a few weeks, Final Fantasy 14 will release its new Shadowbringers expansion that will take players to the First Star, a new dimension for the Square Enix MMO. First Star is like a flipped version of the game’s main world, where players are tasked with defeating the light to restore the darkness instead of the other way around.

To celebrate the pending release of Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers, Square Enix has released a new trailer starring Spider-Man: Far From Home actor Tom Holland. Admittedly, the trailer is light on actual Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers gameplay but it does feature some funny moments between Holland and comedian Hannibal Buress.

In the trailer, Tom Holland is preparing for the imminent release of Shadowbringers by physically training – performing push-ups, practicing with an oversized sword, etc. Buress is quick to point out that the Spider-Man star doesn’t need to actually be in shape to prepare for the Shadowbringers launch, but Holland persists until coming to the realization his efforts are pointless.

It’s a clever play on the way that comic book movies tend to ask their actors to undergo incredible physical transformations and subject themselves to intense workouts, and it’s a surprising cross-promotion for Final Fantasy 14. Most likely either Marvel/Sony or Square Enix sought out the other after realizing that Shadowbringers and Spider-Man: Far From Home release on the same day.

It’s funny to think that at one point Final Fantasy 14 was considered a failed MMO and now the game is set to release its third major expansion. More than that, though, to have a major star like Tom Holland in a trailer for Shadowbringers is pretty significant and likely not cheap.

If they aren’t already, gamers should familiarize themselves with Holland’s comedic side, as the actor is also set to star in the upcoming Uncharted movie. The film was just recently slated for a 2020 release with Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) set to direct. Perhaps the more gamers see of Holland in and around games the more they will be willing to accept him in the role of Nathan Drake, even if he is a bit younger than the video game version.

Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers releases July 2nd, 2019 for PC and PS4.
