Recently, Square Enix made several new announcements for the MMORPG Final Fantasy 14, a big comeback story in the franchise. Most of the news concerned a new update coming before the end of the year, Patch 5.4, that will bring a number of improvements to Final Fantasy 14 such as additional new quests and weapons, but developers also revealed surprise details about its port to the PS5.

The announcement comes from Final Fantasy 14's latest Letter from the Producer LIVE Broadcast on the game's YouTube channel. In the video, producer and director Naoki Yoshida, who is also producer for the recently announced Final Fantasy 16, delivered news about the patch called "Futures Rewritten." In the video, Yoshida also revealed that the game will be backward compatible for the PS5 with quicker load times.

He explained that the MMO will be playable on the next-generation console and players can adjust it to using the in-game PS4 Pro display settings. This will let players choose between a 4K mode or a performance mode while playing on the PS5, as the game originally allowed them to do on the PS4. Yoshida also added that the new console will allow Final Fantasy 14 to run smoothly on the PS5 in 4K at 60 frames per second.

Yoshida talked more about the details of "Futures Rewritten," and what the patch will bring to the game when it launches. The patch will be adding the new Main Scenario Quests that picks up from the conclusion of the Shadowbringers storyline while adding a new raid dungeon: Eden's Promise. The new dungeon is the third chapter of the eight-player Eden raid series, and the updates will continue from there. The patch will introduce the Chronicles of a New Era - The Sorrows of Werlyt which adds the Emerald Weapon into the MMO.

Futures Rewritten will also be adding a new game mode for Final Fantasy 14 called the Explorer Mode, which gives players the option to explore the Shadowbringers dungeon without enemies. This will allow players to take screenshots while they're in the dungeon, and they can even summon their own mounts to spruce up the shots. An additional new dungeon and the Unreal Trial will be added to the game, and the Blue Mage class will be receiving an update that increases the level cap and adds more features.

Players will be able to access new features the Futures Rewritten patch will bring in early December 2020, as well as check out Final Fantasy 14 on PS5 when the new console arrives in November.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC and PS4.
