Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida teases fans on the possibility of crossover content for the MMO based on the upcoming Final Fantasy 16. The long-running MMO has been going on for nearly a decade now, releasing several expansions and updates that have all earned critical and commercial acclaim. It's no secret that Final Fantasy 14 has a fiercely loyal fanbase, especially in regard to its current director and producer, Naoki Yoshida, who is attributed to the game's ongoing success.

With Yoshida being so beloved fans, many were also glad to see him come on board as the director of Final Fantasy 16, with much of the game taking aspects of his previous works while re-interpreting several classic Final Fantasy staples, giving it a much more nuanced and mature story that is comparable to Final Fantasy 14's plots. With the sixteenth entry in the long-running franchise coming out later this summer, the director of both games teased its potential inclusion in the MMO.

This potential expansion was commented on at a recent Q&A session held with the director at the annual gaming convention PAX East, which was also streamed on Twitch. These comments from the producer were prompted by a fan who asked if other Final Fantasy games might appear in the MMO in some shape or form. Yoshida, through his translator, stated that with Final Fantasy 16 coming out soon, it'd be a nice option to look into. It would likely be a safe bet in terms of inspiration, as both FF14 and FF16 were overseen by Yoshida, though this wasn't a hard confirmation.

Yoshida also teased Final Fantasy fans about what other games he'd like to pursue in making crossover content for, such as Final Fantasy 2, along with Final Fantasy 9. He even notes that the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also is a candidate for a potential collaboration, once all the teams have released all the parts. The biggest reaction that he got from the crowd in terms of teasing potential content was also the potential of visiting the setting of Final Fantasy 11, Vana'diel, but then moved on to the next question without further elaboration.

Final Fantasy 14 crossover content is not uncommon, hosting a wide variety of cameo appearances and references. This includes events that saw the worlds of Monster Hunter, Yokai Watch, and even Nier Automata having cosmetics or bosses that originated from these games. The Nier Automata one in particular had a storyline that tied into the plot of 14, being led by series creator Yoko Taro. The potential for Final Fantasy 14 to have a tie-in with the upcoming Final Fantasy 16 would be a great way to take advantage of its hype.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5.
