Final Fantasy 14 recently announced the forthcoming release of its fourth major expansion, Endwalker, will arrive later this year. Square Enix mysteriously referred to Endwalker as the end of the MMO's current story arc, but not the end of Final Fantasy 14. As such, players are hungry to find out what's coming next. Friday, Square Enix offered a glimpse of that with its patch 5.5 trailer, teasing escalating war with Garlemald, the moon, and the next chapter of the Nier: Automata Alliance Raid.

Those who arne't familiar with Final Fantasy 14 will perhaps be most drawn in by the continuation of the MMO's Nier: Automata crossover. The Final Fantasy 14 partnered with Nier creator Yoko Tano to not only create a crossover questline, but to help design raids as well. Two different Alliance Raids have since been released, The Copied Factory and Pupppets' Bunker. 5.5 will introduce the last raid and the final quests associated with it.

The new 5.5 trailer shows just some of what players can expect in the new Nier: Automata raid. There's a mysterious young girl in a red jacket dress who grows gargantuan for a boss fight, a pair of twin knights, and a large black and gold monstrosity that drops red orbs from the sky. All of which appears to be set in a simulation of sorts. Then there's a clip of 2B and 9S staring up at a spire that reaches into the sky. Questions and answers alike await Final Fantasy 14 players.

Final Fantasy 14's 5.5 trailer goes well beyond the new Alliance Raid, however. It also delves into the upcoming main campaign story content. Clearly, the war with Garlemald that will play a major role in Endwalker is igniting once again. The Eorzan Alliance's leadership gathering once more is proof enough of that. There's also Zenos yae Galvus, standing amid his weapons, waiting, as well as the haunting voiceover of the Ascian Fandaniel. The conflict of Eorzea is coming to a head.

Another exciting aspect of the upcoming patch featured in the trailer is a look at the upcoming Diamond Weapon Trial. Players have been fighting through the weapons of the Garlean Empire throughout Shadowbringers. Now it seems the final battle of this particular storyline will arrive soon.

Suffice to say, the 5.5 update for Final Fantasy 14 will be substantial. It's also less than two weeks away, as it'll arrive for subscribers on April 13. Square Enix does make clear that the main story campaign portion of the patch is being broken into two parts, however, with the second half arriving in late May. There should be more than enough content in 5.5 to keep players busy, at least.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC and PS4, with PS5 support starting in April.
