As an MMORPG, the setting of Final Fantasy 14 lends itself well to roleplaying, both in-game and at the tabletop. One Final Fantasy 14 fan has created a new, easy-to-use table top roleplaying system loosely based on the 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons to tell tales set in the world of the critically-acclaimed MMORPG.

The system was designed by Final Fantasy 14 fan and Redditor ladygrey94, also known as Grey Fantasies. A veteran FF14 roleplayer and fan of D&D 5E, she sought to create a system that balances the comprehensive rules of 5E and the freedom of systems like FATE, all while keeping it easy and beginner-friendly.

The system itself is simple and designed in a way to allow for flexibility and customization while requiring minimal die rolling. As characters increase in levels, they gain Character Points to purchase Attributes and Skills to become proficient in. Their HP, MP, and bonus to rolls increase naturally with level, and they can increase their Resilience Rating–comparable to Armor Class in D&D–with armor, abilities, and maneuvers in combat.

To keep things simple, this system only requires a single d20 to resolve things–actions in combat deal set damage. Trained Abilities, which are learned as characters gain levels, can be used to increase damage and maneuver around the battlefield and are fueled by the character’s MP. Some Blessed Abilities–supernatural gifts, like the Echo of Final Fantasy 14 fame–can give additional benefits in and out of combat.

This is not the first Final Fantasy 14 crossover with Dungeons & Dragons on the internet. Soren of Asgard has transformed several Final Fantasy 14 jobs into D&D classes over the years and is currently in the process of updating them with new abilities inspired by Endwalker and Final Fantasy 14’s PvP revamp. Unlike Soren of Asgard’s conversion, which can be used with existing D&D rules, Grey Fantasies’ system is a standalone game.

Though her new system has not gotten a lot of attention yet, the players who have seen it are excited to see what Grey Fantasies does with it. Though she has only just finished the basic and introductory rules, she is already working on a Soul Crystal system, which will allow players to use Soul Crystals to modify their Skills and Attributes–an analogue to the class system in D&D. She is also planning on making stats for races, backgrounds, monsters, and items, as well as settings, additional rules, and even premade adventures.

Interested players can find the roadmap and completed documents–and eventually, the system’s PDFs–on Grey Fantasies’ Eorzea Roleplay System Carrd website, which also contains her contact information and an FAQ about the system.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5.
