Collecting mounts is a popular pastime for players in the critically-acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14. However, rounding out that stable may prove more difficult than some other collections due to Final Fantasy 14's timed exclusivity of mounts.

A fantastic example of this is the Falcon mount. The Falcon is an airship that is summoned via the Falcon Ignition Key. As of this writing, there have only been a handful of ways to obtain the key and each has been a timed event. So for those looking to add the mount to their collection, timing is the name of the game. The Falcon mount itself is based on the airship of the same name that first appeared in Final Fantasy 6.

The Falcon Mount Campaign

The first way to ear the Falcon mount was through the "Fly the Falcon Mount Campaign" that was released with the Stormblood expansion. It was given to players that subscribed for 90 days during the campaign. The event was a special celebration to commemorate the addition of the fabled airship to Final Fantasy 14.

The lore for this particular version is "An independent project of Garlond Ironworks engineer Wedge, this single-rider airship allegedly recorded some of the fastest flight speeds ever...until a tragic accident following an attempt to see how high the ship could soar convinced its creator that perhaps a modicum of restraint was necessary."

Moogle Treasure Trove Event

The other way to obtain the mount was through the Moogle Treasure Trove Event. The first event took place in September of 2019, but the mount was once again available in March of 2021. By running specific dungeons, players would be awarded with special tomestones that could be exchanged for rare goods. In two of these events, the Falcon mount has been available. As such, it is likely the mount will be made available again in a future Treasure Trove Event.

While there may not be a way to claim the mount at the time of this writing, there is hope that it will return once more in the next Moogle Treasure Trove Event. Timed exclusives like these are common in games that use a live service model. It creates a fear of missing out in the player base and encourages them to resubscribe or keep their current subscription active. While there are some that would describe this as a less-than-ideal business model, it is a strategy that clearly works. So, for those that still need the Falcon mount, keep an eye out on the next Moogle Event.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
