The Final Fantasy franchise has seen several spin-offs that have totally altered the core gameplay mechanics. There's the MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 to the cartoonish World of Final Fantasy, and the more strategic Final Fantasy Tactics. One of the series' developers has an idea of where the constantly evolving series could go next, which could involve battle royale.

In a new interview, Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida said, "I would like to make a battle royale game," revealing that he has "some ideas to do that." Yoshida didn't elaborate on these ideas, clarifying whether the battle royale game ideas are new, an original concept or based on the Final Fantasy IP. However, Yoshida did say that "I have some ideas to make that type of game fun."

Many of the elements of the Final Fantasy series would work well within the scope of a battle royale game. The series' character squads - such as Noctis and his friends in Final Fantasy 15 - have great chemistry, and many would love to see that play out in a new battle. The class-based combat in Final Fantasy 14 and the rich lore of the entire franchise could also help to elevate the battle royale genre, offering more than just looting and shooting.

The battle royale genre has three leading games (Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds) and each of them offers something different from the other. PUBG was the breakout star, but Fortnite added building and crafting to the formula, and Apex Legends added hero shooting elements (and character abilities) to the mix. Each of these has found tremendous success by shaking things up a little. So, it stands to reason that Yoshida's potential battle royale game title could do the same. If the Final Fantasy 14 director can deliver innovation to the genre, then many fans would likely welcome it.

However, if Yoshida was to make those battle royale game ideas happen, it would face fierce competition. Aside from Fortnite, PUBG, and Apex Legends, there are franchises with their own takes on the genre, such as Battlefield V's Firestorm and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout. Other well-known developers, such as Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice developer From Software, have also expressed interest in making a battle royale title. For developers, that makes it much harder to stand out, but for fans of battle royale games, it could mean that things are about to get a lot more interesting.

Final Fantasy 14 is available on PC and PS4.
