Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker concluded the saga of Hydaelyn and Zodiark begun nearly 10 years ago with an emotional conclusion. One Final Fantasy 14 fan organized over 1,000 players and musicians together to sing one of Endwalker’s most moving and inspirational songs in an ambitious and incredible collaboration.

Alex Moukala is a talented musician and music analyst who specializes in video game and anime soundtracks. Though he has made countless covers of music from video games, his most recent Final Fantasy 14 project is his most ambitious yet.

A few months back, Moukala called upon the Final Fantasy 14 community to send in recordings of them singing the chorus of “Close in the Distance,” the emotional ballad that plays in the final zone of Endwalker. With the help of several other musicians and Final Fantasy 14 fans, he brought the excerpts together in a truly one-of-a-kind rendition of the song.

If this feat was not impressive enough, Moukala was also able to get a dozen famous musicians and Final Fantasy 14 community members to sing major parts of the song. Amanda Achen (“Tomorrow & Tomorrow” from Shadowbringers and “Flow” from Endwalker), Susan Calloway (“Answers” from A Realm Reborn), Paolo Andrea Di Pietro (“Happy Turtle Jingle” from Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade), and Zepla (famous Final Fantasy 14 Twitch streamer) were just some of the incredible talents who helped make this incredible dream a reality.

Moukala’s fellow Final Fantasy 14 fans were in awe of the community’s collaboration on the project. The Final Fantasy 14 community is one of its best qualities, and this video acts as a tribute to it in many ways. Even Jason Charles Miller –the original singer of “Close in the Distance,” famous for his work with Critical Role and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance– praised the wonderful cover.

Masayoshi Soken, the composer for Final Fantasy 14, has not publicly commented on the cover, but considering he and Moukala have spoken before, he likely will once he sees it. Soken’s incredible songwriting skills lend a great deal of emotional weight to the critically-acclaimed MMORPG, and play a huge role in its success. Final Fantasy 14 director and producer Naoki Yoshida is close friends with Soken, and has the talented composer working on Final Fantasy 16 with him and many other members of the FF14 team. Those unfamiliar with Soken’s work are in for an auditory treat when the next Final Fantasy title launches some time in 2023.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
