After several delays pushed the game into 2011, we are one day away from the release of F.E.A.R. 3, the next chapter in the ongoing horror FPS franchise. While this particular iteration hopes to break up the mechanics with a new co-op dynamic, there are still many qualities that F.E.A.R. 3 retains from its predecessors.

In celebration of the game finally launching, Warner Bros. Interactive has released a new trailer for the game that gives a brief taste of both the game’s storyline and its combat. As the Point Man or, if you’re playing co-op, his brother Paxton Fettel, the player will work to protect their deeply demented mother Alma from the Armacham troops.

Of course there is much more to the game’s plot — especially considering the previous game took a stark detour away from the storyline of the Point Man — so we expect the team at Day 1 Studios have a few surprises in store for gamers.

One real treat that Day 1 has added to make this iteration unique is the way in which Paxton Fettel’s gameplay differs from his brother’s. There are still the traditional FPS mechanics at play, but there is also a new possession ability — only useable by Fettel — that allows the player to inhabit any NPC they come into contact with. It took three iterations for it to be implemented, but now the player can finally experience the psychic powers of Fettel.

Although it isn’t showcased in the trailer, F.E.A.R. 3 also features a revamped series of multiplayer modes — both cooperative and competitive. They might not satisfy the FPS gamer who is looking for your traditional deathmatch variant, but F.E.A.R. 3’s multiplayer should provide a worthwhile change of pace.

All in all F.E.A.R. 3 is the complete package when it comes to an FPS experience — offering single player, cooperative, and multiplayer modes for players to sink their teeth into. Over time the series has become a bit convoluted as far as its storyline is concerned, but the gameplay mechanics have remained solid.
