A movie adaptation produced by Studio Deen and directed by Yūji Yamaguchi was released in 2010. Deen had previously worked on the 2006 Fate/stay night anime, as did Yamaguchi. Takuya Satō, who has worked on series like Steins;Gate, Girls Beyond the Wasteland, and Princess Tutu, served as screenwriter.

Ufotable released a 26 episode anime adaptation in 2014, bringing back the original cast to reprise their roles. The series was much better received than the Deen film, with many praising the quality of the animation and handling of the series leads. Takahiro Miura, who worked on Fate /Zero as well as a handful of the Garden of Sinners films, directed the series. Hideyuki Fukasawa, best known for his work with Capcom, served as the series’ composer.

The anime, film, and manga adapt the 2004 Fate/stay night visual novel’s “Unlimited Blade Works” route, one of three branching plotlines players can choose from. The game has spawned a number of adaptations and spin-offs, kicking off the greater Fate series.

Ufotable also produced a film trilogy adaptation of the “Heaven’s Feel” route, running from 2017-2020. Tomonori Sudō served as director on all three films, with Akira Hiyama serving as the film series’ screenwriter. Both men previously contributed to other Ufotable Type-Moon projects. A manga adaptation of the Heaven’s Feel route illustrated by Task Ohna is currently being serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace imprint, with eight collected volumes so far.

Aniplex USA owns the distribution rights to the Ufotable anime and have released the Unlimited Blade Works series and Heaven’s Feel films on Blu-ray.
