Nintendo's E3 2021 Direct presentation put a surprising focus on third-party games coming to the Nintendo Switch. It had a mix of all kinds of games, including an upcoming horror release. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, a Wii U game made by Koei Tecmo, is confirmed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch. Further, Nintendo says that this updated version of the game for Switch will also include a variety of new content.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is the most recent release in the popular horror franchise. Each of the five games in the series tells a unique horror story, but all of them focus on one particular mechanic. That mechanic being a camera that can see and protect the user from malevolent ghosts. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water tells the story of three women drawn toward the evil of Black Water, united by said mysterious and haunted Camera Obscura.

As for the new content included in the Switch version of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, Nintendo doesn't fully reveal anything. All it's willing to say is that new photo modes and costumes will be included. More details are likely to follow.

One intriguing question left to answer for Nintendo and Koei Tecmo is how the Nintendo Switch will handle the camera mechanics. On the Wii U, players controlled the camera with the console's Wii U GamePad tablet. It likely took quite a bit of work to redesign the game without the tablet. That said, many Fatal Frame fans are likely to be happy they don't have to deal with it anymore.

While the focus of the Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water announcement during the Nintendo E3 2021 Direct was on the Nintendo Switch, understandably, Koei Tecmo had more news to share after the event. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will also be coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Koei Tecmo is bringing the most recently released Fatal Frame game to all major modern platforms.

Fatal Frame fans are certain to take today's announcement as a sign that Koei Tecmo may be considering bringing the franchise back in a more substantial way. Between 2001 and 2008, Koei Tecmo released four Fatal Frame games. Fans couldn't get enough of them. Perhaps the 2020s will be the decade the Fatal Frame franchise returns to its peak.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water releases in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
