Almost every installment in Ubisoft's flagship Far Cry franchise involves a devilishly alluring villain, a protagonist on the edge of sanity, plus an endless army of enemy forces to butcher and dismantle using what Far Cry‘s explosive arsenal has to offer. But this time, the series-defining features are making the leap from video game to reality in one way most fans will not expect.

With the series' upcoming trip sending players to the fictional Caribbean island of Yara in Far Cry 6, it would appear that this time around Ubisoft has taken a unique approach. Gone are the dense digital tropical jungles of Rook Island and the virtual snow-capped valleys that define Kyrat. This Far Cry will take the fight to a brand new tabletop board game.

Revealed earlier on Twitter by board game publisher Funforge, Far Cry Beyond is the latest entry in the series. Details about the setting, characters, and story remain in short supply at the moment, but given the heavy sci-fi nature present in the official artwork linked in the tweet, one can assume that there may be iconography from the acclaimed DLC Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. On the other hand, inspecting closer finds a gradient of the Sun pasted over the heading, implying that this game might go beyond Earth and to various planets in the solar system like Far Cry 5's Lost on Mars expansion.

It was further divulged that a partnership was forged to bring Far Cry Beyond into existence, with Ubisoft teaming up with the privately held European company Funforge. Although, because Funforge has worked on a diverse variety of titles previously, such as Tokaido, Quantum, and Samurai Spirit. It is tricky to foresee what this interpretation of Far Cry will look like when it finally comes out. Nevertheless, this unorthodox take on the even more unconventional Far Cry series is quite intriguing.

Unfortunately, not much information was disclosed by either Ubisoft or Funforge, besides the fact that the tabletop will hit store shelves sometime in 2022. With a release date that distant, players can keep themselves occupied in the meantime on a mission to topple Far Cry 6's evil regime led by Giancarlo Esposito by utilising a number of animal companions, and a backpack that can be modified to perform all manner of helpful guerilla tactics like missile volleys or EMP bursts. Far Cry 6 is soon to launch on October 7 for Luna, PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Far Cry Beyond is scheduled to release in 2022.
