Since its conception back in 2014, The Game Awards seeks to recognize and uphold "creative and technical excellence" in gaming. It is often recognized as one of the most prestigious videogame awards ceremonies, and over the years it had become an important date in any gamer's calendar. With thirty categories currently announced for the 2021 awards, The Game Awards has a lot to cover, and often will ask for fans' help in deciding what is the best of gaming in a given year. The Players' Choice voting has already opened for this year's show, which will take place on Thursday December 9th.

Announced on Twitter by Geoff Keighley, founder of The Game Awards, Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Mandalorian, and Far Cry 6 fame will be appearing at The Game Awards, both as a nominee and a presenter.

Esposito's most famous role in gaming came along this year, when he played "El Presidente" Antón Castillo, the ruthless dictator in control of the game's fictional island of Yara. Esposito was heavily involved in the marketing of Far Cry 6, and appeared in multiple pieces of promotional material. From everything to promoting the game over his own Twitter feed, to deconstructing the game's Rebel Flamethrower while dressed as Castillo, Esposito became the face of Ubisoft's latest open world action shooter.

Giancarlo Esposito is not the first celebrity guest to be announced for this year's awards. Shang-Chi star Simu Liu was announced to be a Game Awards Presenter earlier this week. Many were divided over Liu's inclusion within the ceremony. Some found it hard to connect the actor to the videogames industry, while others praised The Game Awards for their inclusivity and willingness to connect the industry with wider media. Actors known for playing superheroes have appeared at the awards before, such as last year when Brie Larson and Gal Gadot appeared.

Esposito's inclusion is a notable one though, as the actor will be appearing both as a presenter, and a nominee for Best Performance. The already revealed nominees for this year's awards as have always been divisive, with many fans disappointed their favourite game was snubbed or not placed in the category it most deserved an award for. For example, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was notably not nominated for Best Performance. With notable acting within the game, it was a choice many couldn't see the logic in.

The Game Awards 2021 will premiere on December 9, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. PST.
