Ever since Far Cry 3 became a runaway success and brought home multiple game of the year awards in 2012, gamers have been longing for the next feature-length installment in the action-adventure Far Cry universe. Enthusiasts have known that the fourth numbered installment in the series has been on the way for quite some time, but concrete details about the game have only recently started to roll out.
A few months ago we learned that Far Cry 4 would take the series’ next protagonist to new heights in a Himalayan setting and earlier this week the developer revealed the game’s box art and a November 18 release date. Today brings what seems to be a less intentional bit of information concerning the upcoming survival game.
A blurb posted on Ubisoft’s Uplay store today revealed what appears to be the game’s official synopsis. A keen-eyed Reddit user spotted the synopsis this morning. The post has since been removed, but here’s what it had to say before it disappeared (very minor spoilers ahead)…
Hidden in the majestic Himalayas lies Kyrat, a country steeped in tradition and violence. You are Ajay Ghale. Traveling to Kyrat to fulfill your mother’s dying wish, you find yourself caught up in a civil war to overthrow the oppressive regime of dictator Pagan Min.
Explore and navigate this vast open world, where danger and unpredictability lurk around every corner. Here, every decision counts, and every second is a story. Welcome to Kyrat.
The intel may not seem all that juicy, but it definitely provides more insight than we had yesterday. Earlier press releases about the game’s setting revealed similar details about the high-altitude, low-temperature piece of the world where our unfortunate protagonist will find himself this November, but the details about the hero and the villain are new.
We now know the circumstances that will bring the protagonist, Ajay Ghale, to the mountain town of Kyrat and what kind of power the villain, Pagan Min, holds over the area. We look forward to learning more about how the popular survival mechanics from Far Cry 3 can make the leap to this type of setting and this protagonist. Hunting seems like an easy fit in this world, but hopefully the system will be reinvented to make more sense in the cold weather ecosystem.
It’s a pretty high-level view of the game’s story, but we expect more details to arrive in the coming weeks. It seems likely that this information would have been revealed at, or maybe even before, E3 next month, but fans will likely still have plenty of other Far Cry 4 action to soak in as coverage of E3 begins.
Are you excited about the big change in scenery that is coming in Far Cry 4 or would you prefer something more similar to the tropical setting of Far Cry 3? Let us know in the comments.
Far Cry 4 will be available for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 on November 18, 2014.
