2011 is shaping up to be a heavy hitter for blockbuster sequels with Gears of War 3, Mass Effect 3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, and now, according to Official Playstation Magazine, we may be adding one more "3" to the list (there really is a ton of 'em this year) in the form of Far Cry 3, the sequel to 2008's open-world romp Far Cry 2.
Some might recall a similar rumor last year about the game releasing by the end of 2010, but clearly that didn't happen, and one wonders if the game will actually be finished by the end of this year either. There's been a complete lack of details surrounding the game, and I wonder if the media silence is an early indicator that this rumor is bunk. However, those of us who enjoyed the predecessor are eagerly looking forward to hearing details about gameplay.
Many gamers expressed dissatisfaction with certain elements of Far Cry 2, but there were still plenty of strong points. Few games have been as realistically visceral in their creation of a game world, including physics and gunfight mechanics. It had a lot of potential, but fell short in a few key areas, like the AI enemies that seem to be able to pop you through the skull from half a click away with an M9, repetitive missions, and tediously long travel times.
Without any details, one can only speculate as to how Far Cry 3 will address these issues, but if the developers have been paying attention, they've heard the groans of frustrated gamers and have tuned things up for the better. Considering the predecessor's focus on creating an immersive world with a working ecosystem, one might expect to see expanded flora and fauna in the third installment. The idea of factions and alliances was good to explore last game, but the fact that everybody attacked you anyway sort of defeated the point.
I for one would love to see the game take a more realistic approach to being a mercenary in Africa; Possibly allowing you to call for backup from your allies instead of having to die before a friend showed up. I also think a game like this has unique opportunities for morality gameplay. Maybe you can assist in stabilizing regions, making it safer for civilians to live there, but throw in the dilemma of having to choose which warring faction is really the best to rule. And hey, how about giving us a character that has some personality or significance this time? Some voice acting, backstory, cutscenes? Too much to ask?
If left to my imagination I'd probably just end up writing a script myself, but for now, as the Official Playstation Magazine writes, "Start taking the malaria medicine in preparation: Far Cry 3 could be arriving before the end of the year."
Let's pray to the development deities that Ubisoft pulls through with a quality product soon.
