Casting choices are one of those elements in a film that lead to a significant portion of online discussion. Even after release there can be those lingering "what ifs." For director Josh Trank, that pondering has turned into regret.

Trank served as director for the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four and continues to regret the decision of not pursuing a more diverse cast. Trank spoke to Geeks of Color and revealed his original intentions for the Storm family. The original plan was to make the Storms a black family having both Sue Storm and Johnny Storm played by black actors.

Within the interview, Trank was questioned directly about the casting choice of the Storms who were played by Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara. When directly asked if a black actress was considered for the role of Sue Storm, Trank admits that it was the case but it ultimately didn't materialize.  Trank explained that the big focus of discussions were "who the big stars are going to be" met with "pushback on casting a black woman in that role."

Trank explains that upon retrospect, he is embarrassed that he didn't push for it out of principal. The lack of diversity was one of the first missteps for Trank in a project plagued with issues. Fantastic Four released to wide critical panning and a poor box office performance. The bad word of mouth is one of the reasons Tranks' Boba Fett film never came to be.

Trank isn't the only director to ponder on his older work. Just last week, David Ayer made a stand to release his cut of the 2016 blockbuster Suicide Squad in vein of the Snyder Cut. As for Trank, Fantastic Four is far behind him and he's already made it clear his cut is never coming.

Josh Trank's latest film Capone is streaming now.
