As far as the aggregate review scores go, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the worst one of the current trilogy. That is unfortunate because fans have been waiting a long time for a new movie set in the Harry Potter universe. The first movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, was in 2016.

Its sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, was in 2018. Everything looked like it was on track for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore to come in 2020 but then the pandemic hit and threw so many movie franchises off. While the reviews have not been overly positive, there are plenty of things to love about this movie. There will be spoilers.

8 Finding The Qilin

Newt in Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore

The best thing about the first movie was that it was trying to be different from the core Harry Potter series. It was a prequel, it focused on adults rather than kids, and Newt’s whole goal was to track down animals. It was like a Pokemon movie before that live-action one was made.

The other two movies got away from this core idea of tracking down interesting animals and instead tried to be about another wizarding war. There are moments in The Secrets of Dumbledore that highlight animals like Newt’s discovery of the Qilin. It’s a touching scene.

7 Showing The Blood Pact

Dumbledore and his blood pact in Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore

The blood pact was briefly shown and discussed in the first two movies. However, its power is pretty vague in those movies. When Dumbledore reveals its power to Theseus and Newt in this movie, viewers finally got a glimpse of how strong these blood pacts can be.

Fans of this overall series know how powerful blood and love can be. It’s what saved Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort’s curse. His mom sacrificed herself for her beloved son. The blood pact within Dumbledore’s necklace is seemingly a bit more powerful though.

6 Jacob Kowalski

Jacob in Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore

Jacob has been one of the best parts of all these movies except for the cute critters. There’s never been a Muggle thrown into a cast like this. Hermione doesn’t fully count since she has magical powers. Jacob is like the surrogate for the audience. He experiences the wonders of the wizarding world that all fans of this series desperately dream of.

He has a lot of heart in this trilogy and his jokes are some of the best. Plus, without spoiling anything, his arc finally gets a decent close at the end of The Secrets of Dumbledore.

5 Credence Vs Dumbledore

Credence fighting in Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore

Dumbledore doesn’t do much in the previous two films besides being mysterious. He finally gets to fight in The Secrets of Dumbledore, with his best engagement happening with Credence. Their fight is like something out of Doctor Strange comics.

They are warping between realities, throwing buildings at each other, as well as powerful magical beams. It doesn’t last that long which is the only shame about this encounter. Also, of note, it leads to a sweet outcome in the finale.

4 The Romantic Entanglement Between Dumbledore And Grindelwald

Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore

The fight between Dumbledore and Grindelwald at the very end is also cool. However, there is a better thing to admire about them in this film: their love. Their relationship is not as overt as in the previous two movies. The Secrets of Dumbledore shows how much they care about each other. That moment when they touch chests in their duel is heartbreaking.

Their moments are brief but you can tell there is genuine love there still. If only those two could have hugged it out in the end. Maybe Lord Voldemort would have never been a thing.

3 The Dinner Scene

The dinner scene wherein Jacob attempts on Grindelwald’s life should be highlighted. One, Jacob has some great moments before this “assassination” attempt. Two, Eulalie shows how amazing she is at using charm spells. She must have known Dumbledore wanted to make it look like Jacob was a wizard. That’s why she made the storm appear above Jacob’s head.

Why no one tried to kill Jacob immediately after this is a head-scratcher. It would have been so easy but thankfully nothing bad happened. If Jacob died, The Secrets of Grindelwald would have gotten a 0% rating from the fans on Rotten Tomatoes.

2 The Secrets Of The Suitcases

It’s kind of bizarre how Bunty was able to make a bunch of duplicate suitcases, imbued with magic, in a short amount of time. It didn’t even look like the tailor got a good look at them before she stormed off. Who had the real suitcase in the market final battle was a good mystery.

It was also fun when it was revealed what was inside each of these replicas. One had baked goods that replicated themselves while another contained Quidditch equipment that was seemingly programmed to kill. The infinite donuts one seemed like a gift.

1 Being Back In The World

Theseus and Newt in Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore

While the core book and film series have been done for ages, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has remained very much h alive. The first movie in this trilogy helped reawaken that sensation. The best part of The Secrets of Dumbledore, overall, was getting to experience that feeling again. Being able to travel to fantastical lands via cinema is like magic.

That may sound a bit cheesy to say but some fans may not see it that way. Hopefully, there is another movie after this because there are a lot of unanswered questions.
