Of all the games within the franchise, Resident Evil 4 is probably the one that fans will often reminisce about, which switched things up and caused it to move in a new direction in the early 2000s. While Resident Evil in general is an influential horror series, it's the fourth game that frequently tops the list of people's favorites. For that reason, a number of modders have been hard at work for the last eight years bringing graphical tweaks and some up-to-date features to this beloved 17-year-old classic.

According to a recent report from DSO Gaming, the fan-made Resident Evil 4 HD project is now finally out. Version 1.0 does exactly what it says on the tin, it brings high-definition graphical prowess to the aging entry, which offers a complete remaster of the original game, and includes enhanced textures, improvements to character models and cutscenes, as well as general lighting and visual effects. The mod page also features a video which instructs players on how to install it.

Resident Evil 4 HD Project has been hotly-anticipated, and while it's not a full remake, the fact that it provides a way to play the game with a better, cleaner look is a testament to people's love of the game, and the talent of the modding team. As well as the aforementioned improvements and tweaks, the add-on fixes a number of bugs, and adds some extra features, such as the ability to alter the FOV. It should be mentioned at this stage that this is not a standalone remaster of the original game, but is a mod, and players will need to have a copy of the PC version beforehand.

While rumors about a possible Resident Evil 4 official remake are rampant, it's still not certain whether Capcom is actually working on it or not. Of course, many fans would love to see the game have a full remake, bringing the beloved 2005 release into the modern gaming era, but for now, the fan-made HD mod is an excellent way to at least experience the game in a new light.

With the success of last year's Resident Evil 4 VR, which recently received some quality-of-life updates, it's proof that this specific entry is one that is still making waves in the surrounding community. While the franchise on the whole is still soldiering on, with Village recently selling 5.7 million copies, the fourth installment seems to be the one that many fans are keen to return to, or see make a modern comeback.
