There are some talented individuals out there who are more than keen to remake some of the original Resident Evil titles. Recently, a fan released a demo for a remake of Code Veronica that they've been working on. While the classic games in the franchise are somewhat dated visually, it seems as though the community will always keep returning to them. Now, someone else has decided to get in on the act and has beenn working on a remake of the original game, only with a bit of a twist.

So far, developer and user PerroAutonomo has uploaded a work-in-progress which remakes the first Resident Evil game using the Unity engine. While it seems to be a faithful recreation of the 1996 survival horror game, keeping the visual style intact, it changes things up a bit by having this version in first-person rather than third-person. One of the videos on the itch.io page even shows that the opening cut-scene has been redone using animation and models rather than actors. The developer does reiterate that their version of the game, which they simply call Biohazard, is still being worked on, and is a labor of love and not intending to "make a profit."

Additional videos on the game's download page also show what this older Resident Game looks like in the new first-person perspective. The game also retains many of the aspects from Capcom's originals, including the atmospheric music, and environmental sounds such as doors opening and the zombie groans. Overall, what this fan remake does is pay homage to the visuals and sounds of the first RE game from way back when, only with a different viewpoint and done in Unity. It's a very impressive beta so far, and it seems as though it has the potential to be even better the more PerroAutonomo works on it.

The Unity Engine is one of the most popular video game development tools, second perhaps only to Unreal. It's used in the creation of many independent titles, but has also been instrumental in bringing to life some bigger games, such as the hugely successful ghost hunting co-op Phasmophobia, and the Viking MMO Valheim.

While the fan community is busy creating their own remakes and versions of the series, many are still waiting to hear whether anything official will be happening. With a Resident Evil 4 remake being teased to death, fans are getting antsy about whether or not it will happen. There's a good chance Capcom will announce something, especially given the buzz around it, but for now, Resident Evil fans can play PerroAutonomo's beta as well as some of the other fan remakes out there.
