It has been 17 years since Capcom released Resident Evil 4, which became one of the most celebrated entries in the main franchise. It is no secret that Resident Evil 4 revolutionized the franchise by dumping the traditional fixed camera angles and tank controls of its predecessors and replacing them with a modern over-the-shoulder control scheme.

On February 2, the Resident Evil 4 HD Project is set to release on the PC. The Resident Evil 4 HD Project is a fan-made mod of the game's PC version that features a tremendous asset and texture overhaul, aiming to make it the most aesthetically pleasing version. It is worth remembering that while Capcom did release an HD version of Resident Evil 4, it didn't quite live up to its name, which is why fans of the game should be excited about the upcoming mod.

Resident Evil 4 HD Project is Done with the Utmost Passion and Dedication

In 2014, Capcom released Resident Evil 4: Ultimate HD Edition on the PC via Steam, and was technically a high-resolution version. Unfortunately, the changes Capcom made were limited and just made assets a little sharper. Due to this, the Resident Evil 4 HD Project team decided to take matters into their own hands and started developing the mod that took eight years to make.

It took nearly a decade for the Resident Evil 4 HD Project to come to fruition, mainly because of the excruciating detail the team embarked on to upgrade the existing version of the game to true HD. According to the two main creators of the project, the team had to retrace Capcom's footsteps by visiting locations that inspired the game, such as the Raglan Castle in Wales and the Palau Güell in Barcelona. The creators took high-resolution photos of the same textures used in the original game on those locations.

Upon collecting the necessary photographs, the team scrapped most of the textures in the existing version of Resident Evil 4 and re-created them from scratch. The team also underwent the excruciating process of analyzing the original textures to ensure that the new ones match. Given this, it is exciting to see all the changes implemented in the Resident Evil 4 HD Project.

Another reason fans should be excited about the Resident Evil 4 HD Project is that it could serve as a new way to play the classic game while waiting for Capcom's official remake. However, it is worth remembering that despite all the buzz surrounding Capcom's remake of Resident Evil 4, it remains unannounced. For years, rumors have claimed that, despite the lack of an official confirmation, the remake of Resident Evil 4 is already in development.

Several other Resident Evil projects such as Resident Evil Village and even the VR version of Resident Evil 4 have been released. Yet, Capcom still hasn't hinted anything about the existence of Resident Evil 4 Remake. At the moment, the most substantial piece of evidence on the existence of the remake can be found in leaked documents after Capcom was hacked in November 2020. According to the leak, the Resident Evil 4 Remake has already been in development and will be released in late 2022.

If this leak turns out to be accurate, fans could expect an official announcement from Capcom sometime in the coming months. However, given that Capcom remains tight-lipped as February 2022 approaches, there is a likelihood that the Resident Evil 4 Remake could be delayed to 2023. Nonetheless, for fans who are eagerly waiting to revisit Leon Kennedy's journey to the horrific village in Spain, the Resident Evil 4 HD Project is set to provide the best-looking version of the game for now.
