Over the years, The Fast and The Furious films have evolved from relatively simple movies about street racing into big-budget Hollywood blockbusters with action set pieces that defy the laws of physics. However, YouTube creators Kent Yoshimura and Kevin Fairy have taken the franchise back to its more modest roots with a recreation of the original film that was produced for under $100.

Produced for exactly $91.91, Yoshimura and Fairy's version of The Fast and The Furious summarizes the events of the first film in roughly 20 minutes with both men sharing duties of portraying dozens of characters. The Fast and The Furious fan film also makes use of toy vehicles and stock VFX explosions to recreate some of the movie's high-octane action sequences. The score was taken from AudioJungle and features an audio watermark at certain points.

The Fast and The Furious followed Los Angeles police officer Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) on an undercover mission into the world of illegal street racing in order to bring down a crew of unknown automobile hijackers led by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). However, O'Conner finds himself being torn between his duty as a cop and the new friendship he develops with Toretto while becoming enamored with the street racing world. Released in 2001, the success of The Fast and The Furious led to multiple sequels, two of which have earned over $1 billion each, video games, and a spin-off, with the franchise becoming more financially and critically successful as it moved toward stories involving heists and even science-fiction elements.

The Fast and The Furious film series was originally set to continue with the May 2020 release of the ninth entry in the franchise, F9. However, the coronavirus pandemic resulted in Universal pushing back the release date of F9 by nearly a full year to April 2021. A tenth film is currently scheduled to be released on April 1, 2022, and it is intended to be the final chapter of the main Fast saga. However, Universal is developing The Fast and The Furious spin-offs, including an untitled female-led film and a sequel to Hobbs and Shaw, the first entry in the studios slate of spin-offs.

Considering the bizarre route The Fast and The Furious films have taken over the years, this fan film may not be the strangest thing to come out of the franchise as of late. Considering franchise star Christopher 'Ludacris' Bridges has already alluded to the possibility of F9 having scenes in space, Yoshimura and Fairy's film seems relatively tame in comparison.

Fast and Furious 9 will be released in theaters on April 2, 2021.
