As the entertainment industry grapples with issues of representation, voice roles in which white actors played characters of color have come to the forefront. As actors step away from their roles, others are stepping up as more fitting replacements.

Voice actor Mike Henry recently announced the he would be stepping away as the voice of Cleveland Brown. As fans prepare for what will be a sharp change after 20 years with Cleveland's voice, The Wire actor Wendell Pierce has started vying for the role.

It was shortly after Henry's announcement that Pierce tweeted his first step in a public campaign to take over the role. Pierce tweeted at the official Cleveland Show Twitter account along with the hashtag#WendellIsCleveland. Pierce also attempted to tweet Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane but tweeted to the wrong account.

Henry's departure from the role and subsequently Pierce's campaign comes as the entertainment industry shifts to greater awareness. Henry is not the only white voice actor to step down from a long standing role. The Simpsons will no longer characters of color voiced by the white actors on the show. Both actors Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer will step away from their non-white roles.

This news comes as shows proceed to examine previous problematic content. The comedy show Community recently had one of its most popular episodes pulled from Hulu and Netflix. The episode "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" featured a character as a dark elf with painted black skin which resembled black face.

While a change in any actor will be jarring, Pierce's campaign likely speaks to his love for the character. With over 29000 likes and nearing 6000 retweets, Pierce definitely has a chance.
