Sakurai Impressed by Resident Evil: Revelations on the 3DS

Lately, Co-Founder of Project Sora and famed game developer Masahiro Sakurai has been singing the praises of the Nintendo 3DS. He can’t seem to get enough of it. The man behind both the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series has also provided details on his latest project, Kid Icarus: Uprising.

After a recent hands-on session Sakurai had this to say regarding Resident Evil: Revelations:

“I’ve been most impressed with the Nintendo 3DS. The Resident Evil demo was very impressive. The real time graphics in that are very impressive and I’ve already seen things that I can learn from that.”

Recent news of Capcom’s ramped up development cycle, has some gamers worried that their increased game output will come at the expense of creativity and polish. However, Sakurai’s impressions bode well for fans of the Resident Evil franchise. The only true portable Resident Evil game was 2006’s Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, a direct port of the original. Resident Evil: Revelations looks to be the first original entry for the series in the handheld market and is a possible launch title for the 3DS.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of the Resident Evil series and Resident Evil 4 is one of my top games of all time. I just don’t know what to take from Sakurai’s comments. A developer of this caliber certainly holds sway in the gaming community, but what do his impressions really amount to? I’m sure the game looks great, but I’m much more interested in its gameplay and storyline. In fact, I don’t see Sakurai’s comments as anything more than a chance to pimp the 3DS. His statement gives me hope for the game, but in reality, is no more meaningful than Miyamoto claiming the latest Mario spin-off is good.

We will get to see Resident Evil: Revelations or ourselves when Capcom releases it in 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS.
