Fallout New Vegas Patch

Considered to be one of the biggest game titles of year, Fallout: New Vegas was released yesterday to fans looking for their next Fallout fix. Almost immediately after getting their hands on the game many players were complaining of running into bugs, freezes, choppy graphics, and other strange issues. Thankfully, there is some good news as Bethesda has reported that they are currently working on patches to fix these issues on all platforms.

Pete Hines, who works in marketing at Bethesda Softworks, has stated that Bethesda and Obsidian are aware of the issues players are reporting, that both companies are doing what they can to resolves the problems:

"We are currently working on releasing patches/updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas, for all platforms. Announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming."

The bugs seem to range from extremely annoying to game breaking to just plain weird. On the annoying side of things, many PS3 owners are reporting the game can get extremely choppy every few minutes while exploring the wasteland. I personally have the PS3 version, and have experienced this first hand. On the game breaking side of things, I have had three systems lockups in the four or so hours I have played the game: once in transition to a menu screen, once during a load screen, and another just randomly walking down a highway. However, one bug a Steam user ran into is pretty weird and comical as far as bugs go. Check out the below video capture from the game's opening that is fitting and just in time for Halloween.

As a game that I have been waiting to get my hands on for sometime now, these bugs are extremely frustrating. When the game works it has been very entertaining. However, I think I may have to put it aside until these bugs are sorted out. I have already wasted a significant portion of my four hours of game time replaying progress I lost from a freeze.

Many high profile games have seen delays this year, and it appears that Fallout: New Vegas probably should have been added to that list. There are always going to be bugs in games of this size and scope, but this many of them should not appear during the first few hours of play. Didn't any play testers run into any of these issues? Did they find these bugs and Bethesda chose to release the game anyways? These are questions many gamers will be asking until the patch arrives. Hopefully, the patch will fix the issues the on the first attempt, allowing gamers to enjoy the game as intended.

Ranters, has your experience with Fallout: New Vegas been bug free, or have you experienced the same kinds of problems reported above?

Fallout: New Vegas is now available in a semi-playable state for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
