Fallout: New Vegas is considered to be one of the best games in the Fallout franchise. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and released in 2010, Fallout: New Vegas quickly became a huge hit despite some technical issues. One of the strengths of the game is considered to be how well-written and memorable the characters are. The villains, Benny and Mr. House, were well received, along with The Courier's potential allies. While players can choose to go it alone and play New Vegas without any help, the game has a cast of supporting characters who can help players in their journey.

Fallout: New Vegas continues to be popular in the modding community, where, to this day, gamers are making new mods to breathe new life into the game. New Vegas has received updated visuals, restored cut content, and updated NPCs thanks to the efforts of the gaming community. New Vegas went on to become popular despite numerous technical issues and bugs. One aspect that resonated well with fans was the companions that players could recruit. While not all of them were the most effective in combat or memorable, some stood out as interesting characters with engaging backstories.

Craig Boone

Craig Boone in Fallout New Vegas

Craig Boone is first encountered in the town of Novac, where he acts as a guard covering the night shift. Boone is a retired sharpshooter, and he used to serve in the New California Republic's army. Boone has a tragic backstory, where he was the survivor of the Bitter Springs Massacre, which saw members of the Great Khans slaughtered. Sometime after this conflict, Boone met a woman named Carla, who helped him overcome his trauma from the Bitter Springs Massacre. Unfortunately, she was later kidnapped by Caesar's Legion, which left Craig Boone purposeless other than killing members of the Legion. The Courier can help Boone get his revenge during the story and resolve this tragic piece of backstory.

When Boone is first encountered, he has lost his passion for life other than bringing the fight to Caesar's Legion. While Boone might be a cold and calculating killer hardened by his military experiences, he is ultimately a good character who wishes to find peace. His inner turmoil, coupled with his usefulness in combat, makes Boone one of the most memorable companions in Fallout.

Lily Bowen

Fallout New Vegas Companion Lily Bowen

Lily Bowen represents the humorous and absurd side of Fallout effectively. Before becoming a nightkin, the blue-skinned variation of the super mutants, Lily was a 75-year-old grandmother who enjoyed the simple life in Vault 17. She was turned into a mutant after being exposed to the Forced Evolutionary Virus, and she acted as a spy after her change. Lily is a constant source of comic relief, as her maternal personality is still intact despite her developing schizophrenia and becoming a nightkin. Her brutish exterior juxtaposes her personality extremely well, making her one of the funniest and most memorable companions in Fallout: New Vegas.

Raul Tejada

Fallout New Vegas Companion Raul Tejada

Raul is a ghoul companion that players can recruit in Fallout: New Vegas. Thanks to his being a ghoul, Raul is immediately memorable when players might be used to the irradiated creatures attacking them. Before Fallout's Great War, Raul was living on a ranch just outside Mexico City, where he occasionally found himself in trouble with the local law enforcement. Raul endured some tragedy during his pre-war life after a fire at the ranch killed most of his family, leaving just him and his sister, Rafaela, alive. Raul and his sister made it to Mexico City, away from the site of their family's slaughter, and this is where Raul's transformation into a ghoul began.

Raul settled down eventually and became a mechanic, before being imprisoned by Tabitha, the nightkin who broadcasts on Black Mountain Radio. It's here where players can choose to free Raul from his captivity and add him to the crew. Other than his tragic backstory, one of Raul's most endearing qualities is that he was around before Fallout's Great War occurred. Raul expresses indifference about the state of the Mojave Wasteland, and he doesn't seem overly fussed about who's in control of New Vegas. Despite having dealt with some terrible circumstances, Raul's sense of humor has been left intact, and he regularly expresses his fondness for anything sweet placed into his inventory.

Rex

Fallout New Vegas Companion Rex Dog

The Fallout games have a history of including canine companions, and Rex is New Vegas's recruitable hound dog. Players encounter Rex in the Freeside section of the city of New Vegas, where an Elvis impersonator, the King, owns him. Rex was born before the Great War took place, and he was later enhanced with cybernetic implants while serving with the Denver Police Department. At one point during his lifetime, Rex was actually owned by Caesar, the leader of Caesar's Legion. While Rex is incapable of having conversations with The Courier, it's his quest, Nothin' But a Hound Dog, that makes him even more memorable.

Due to his age, Rex, unfortunately, is experiencing neurodegeneration when players encounter him. Rex will sadly pass away if he goes untreated, but luckily, The Courier can save him by acquiring a new brain for him. In one of the most memorable Fallout: New Vegas quests, players can acquire a selection of brains for Rex, with each one giving him a unique bonus. In saving Rex, players gain a healthy and faithful companion who will go into battle with them. While Rex doesn't exactly talk, his appearance and urgency of his associated quest make him one of the most memorable team members.

The Fallout games are chock full of followers and some are more memorable than others. New Vegas, in particular, possesses some of the most unique in the entire franchise. The varied group of potential companions tends to have endured terrible events, but their characterization is disparate. New Vegas is no exception, where some characters who have endured terrible circumstances are made all the more memorable because of their ordeals.

Fallout: New Vegas is available now on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
