Fallout: New Vegas 2 has been at the top of fan wishlists for some time. The original New Vegas game has been widely recognized as one of the greatest Fallout games, and some fans have been waiting for a return to the setting for years. There has been no official confirmation of Fallout: New Vegas 2, but gamers have been hoping that it could happen someday. Many fans of the series consider New Vegas to be the best of the series since its acquisition by Bethesda. While the online chatter and speculation has lessened, there is still some hope of a New Vegas sequel being made someday.

The chances of seeing a sequel to New Vegas are higher than they have been in years. Microsoft acquired the developer of New Vegas, Obsidian Entertainment, in late 2018. In 2020, Microsoft purchased Bethesda, the current owners of the Fallout franchise. In the immediate aftermath of Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda, rumors started doing the rounds online about a possible sequel to New Vegas. Since then, there has been no official news on a new Fallout game from Bethesda or Obsidian. Despite this, fans still have plenty of reasons to be hopeful about a New Vegas follow-up.

Microsoft Owns Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment

Microsoft Bethesda deal properties

Fallout: New Vegas 2 has been rumored for years, but as of late, the chatter surrounding a possible sequel has silenced. When Bethesda was acquired by Microsoft, there was a lot of buzz about the potential for a New Vegas sequel. In recent months, as no official statements have been made about a new Fallout game, the speculation around a new Fallout: New Vegas title has diminished. Both Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment seem to be quite busy at the moment, but that doesn't mean hopes for New Vegas 2 should be entirely dashed.

Microsoft has all the pieces needed for a New Vegas sequel under the Xbox Game Studios banner. Bethesda holds the rights to the Fallout franchise, and Obsidian Entertainment was the developer behind the beloved original New Vegas title. By Microsoft owning these companies, a sequel to New Vegas will remain a possibility in the minds of some fans. It may not happen any time soon, considering the various projects that Bethesda and Obsidian have in the works. Both developers are working on big RPG games right now, but the door could be open in the future for a collaboration on a potential New Vegas sequel.

Obsidian Entertainment's Secret Project

Obsidian Entertainment Projects

Avowed looks set to be the next big project from Obsidian Entertainment. The RPG is a spin-off from the Pillars of Eternity series, and it's said to be taking a direction similar to that of The Elder Scrolls. While Avowed is poised to be a huge release from the developer, Obsidian does have another project in the cardsIt could come as a pleasant surprise to Fallout fans that Josh Sawyer, the director of Fallout: New Vegas, is working on Obsidian's unannounced project.

Josh Sawyer confirmed the news himself that he's working on a project at Obsidian Entertainment. His credits include Fallout: New Vegas, Icewind Dale, and Pillars of Eternity. With his wealth of experience with RPG titles, it's not unreasonable to think that he's working on a new role-playing title. While there's no confirmation of what his project is, many fans have speculated that it could be a follow-up to Fallout: New VegasJosh Sawyer directed the original New Vegas title, and with Microsoft owning Bethesda and Obsidian, there is a chance this could be related to New Vegas. There is no evidence to prove that it's a Fallout game, but it is technically possible.

Bethesda Might Be Too Busy for a New Fallout

Fallout New Vegas Bethesda Obsidian

Fallout is one of the biggest franchises in gaming and one of the most popular IPs that Bethesda owns. While Bethesda continues to work on Fallout 76, the developer is also creating a new Elder Scrolls game and the long-awaited StarfieldDue to the presumed scope of its new games, Bethesda simply might not have the capacity to work on a brand new Fallout game. This is where Obsidian Entertainment could come in and possibly deliver a successor to New Vegas. While Obsidian is undoubtedly busy too, the developer could have more resources available than Bethesda for a large project like a New Vegas sequel.

Obsidian Entertainment is known to be working on several new games, including the new secret project headed up by Josh Sawyer. It was noted in late 2019 that the company has several RPG games in the works. One of these titles is bound to be Avowed, which was announced in July 2020, but beyond the Pillars of Eternity spin-off, it seems as though Obsidian has multiple other RPG games in the works. The confirmation of multiple RPGs in development, and Josh Sawyer himself confirming he's working on a new game, has led to speculation that Obsidian could be taking on a Fallout game instead of Bethesda right now.

Bethesda tends to take on a smaller number of projects at a time and work on them over the course of many years. Obsidian, on the other hand, seems to be picking up steam in recent years and have proven its expanded capacity and capability to work on several big projects at once. Obsidian has at least acknowledged Fallout: New Vegas 2, though it remains to be seen if the developer is working on the title at all.

Fans are hoping to see a follow-up to the fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas. Nothing has been official confirmed, but gamers' hopes remain high. Though the online discussion around the possibility has declined, there's arguably a stronger chance of it happening now, due to Microsoft's ownership of Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment. In January 2021, an unverified leak claimed that Fallout: New Vegas 2 would be made, but fans will likely have to wait some time to see if there's any truth to the leaks.

Fallout: New Vegas 2 has not been officially announced.
