A team of modders is taking the original Fallout game and turning it into a post-apocalyptic Doom clone, with an emphasis on that 90s FPS aesthetic. With Fallout 5 still in its plans, Bethesda seems keen to move forward with the franchise. However, it seems the fan base still has a lot of love to give for the older entries, especially seeing as the entire series will be celebrating 25 years of existence come October 10, and many will no doubt be looking forward to this fan mash-up.
The original installment in the long-running franchise was released in 1997 and developed by Interplay. The first two games were something of a cult hit, with isometric visuals and a stronger focus on story and stat building. With Bethesda taking over for 2008's Fallout 3 and beyond, the series has seen a massive shift into commercial success, but some have not forgotten where things started. In fact, some would say that Fallout 1 and 2 are deserving of remakes, perhaps as a means of widening its appeal to newer gamers who never got to play them the first time round.
In the meantime, there's Fallout: Bakersfield, which is being created by a number of developers, including Alexander Berezen, who is an artist responsible for some Fallout mods. A teaser trailer shows this latest project will be a mix-up of the game's style and world with a lean towards classic FPS games like Doom. The clip shows the player, from a first-person rather than isometric perspective, shooting and punching zombies, and it looks pretty exciting. Currently, there is no proposed release date for Bakersfield, though a brief flash of text onscreen talks about the settlement of Bakersfield and mentions the date October 23, 2077, which marks the start of the Great War in the Fallout timeline. As such, it might not mean anything in regards to the mod, but it could possibly hint at some more details coming on this date, though probably not in the year 2077.
In any case, it will be a fun experience if the mod does get a full release. The era of classic Doom clones is one that many from a bygone era of gaming will remember. Such titles as Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D, and Blood are a nostalgia trip for older gamers. Of course, there has been a resurgence of retro-style first-person shooters these past few years, and no doubt Bakersfield can slip right into this new era while also honoring two and half decades of the Fallout franchise.
As for the original release, Fallout 1 is a beloved RPG from the 90s, with its incredible narrative, engaging dialogue, and a sense of satire that some of the current entries don't touch on much, aside from New Vegas. As such, the opportunity to see it make a comeback as a Doom-style FPS is certainly one that fans will want to keep a close eye on.
