Gathering resources to build your CAMP and other things of interest is a large component of what you’ll spend your time doing in Fallout 76. For those players who want to build especially large and intricate CAMPs, it’s important to know the best ways to get the resources you need.

These tips are a generalized recommendation for the average player on the average server. If you’re playing with groups hoarding particular resources then you might have to tweak some things and others won’t apply at all. But generally speaking, here’s the way to start farming the resources you need more efficiently.

10 Use Your Stash

A stash is a vital tool for accumulating resources and perhaps one of the most important things you can build in your CAMP early on. A stash is a special storage container that can be accessed at any ‘safe’ location on the map. This means you can store some items you found when near the Red Rocket gas station and you’ll be able to pull those items from the stash in your CAMP.

The stash can stow a large number of items which can make farming runs very efficient. Simply fill the stash to the brim from a safe location and you’ll be able to access all those resources when you’re ready to start building your base.

9 Special Perks

Once you’ve filled your stash you’re going to want to maximize the amount of stuff you can carry in your inventory. There are a number of perks that can help with this, but perhaps the most important is the Pack Rat perk

Pack Rat, when fully upgraded, will reduce the weight of junk by 75%, allowing you to nearly double the amount of Junk you can carry. Other perks that can be helpful are things like Ordnance Express which lessens the weight of explosives, Sturdy Frame which lowers armor weight, and Travel Agent which lowers the cost of fast travel. Anything that can lower the weight of things you carry is something to consider.

8 Bulk Aluminum & Lead

Another trick you can do is bulk aluminum and lead. If you’re carrying a lot of these particular components you can swing by a Tinker’s Workbench and bundle ten units of each resource into a single bulk item.

Bulking aluminum and lead will actually reduce the total weight by half, essentially doubling your carrying capacity for these particular items. The other resources aren’t affected in this way, but if you’re on an aluminum or lead run then absolutely start bundling them together to carry more.

7 Scrap Weighs Less Than Junk

Another thing to keep in mind is that when you break junk items down the resulting components will weight less than the original item. This is true across the board and a great way to conserve some space if you don’t plan on selling the original item.

It also can be easier to keep track of what you’re carrying and dispose of resources you may not want. Breaking down a pencil will give you a unit of wood and lead. If you don’t want the wood you can dump it and free up that 0.1 of space for something else. It doesn’t sound like much, but do this with dozens of items and you’ll see the benefit.

6 Know The Best Farming Spots

When searching for a particular scrap resource it’s important to know the best places to go for the items that break down into that scrap. For example, if you want lead then going to any of the gyms will yield barbells and dumbbells with Lead. If you need nuclear material, start scavenging the Pleasant Valley Cabins for board games.

There are a lot of different farming spots for each item so either ask other players or start keeping track of where you find things. Keep in mind that the more commonly known areas will see a ton of foot traffic so watch yourself.

5 Never Go Empty Handed

Whenever you go anywhere or do anything in this game, get into the habit of filling your inventory to the brim with whatever you can find. Don’t become over-encumbered obviously, but if you can stuff a baseball or two among your stash of weapons and ammo go ahead and do it.

It doesn’t sound like much, but having a few items here and there will slowly start to grow your scrap piles while you’re doing other things. Littering isn’t a thing in this game, so don’t hesitate to chuck those baseballs if you find something more important to your building plans.

4 Build The Collectron Bot

A passive way to start collecting the resources you need is to build a Collectron Bot at your CAMP. This little guy will start running around collecting either junk or scrap, depending on what you direct it to do.

Granted it takes a while and it’ll only be able to collect so much weight, so you’ll have to routinely clean out its inventory. But having a handful of components or items gathered every few hours adds up over time and can cut down on farming trips.

3 Build On Deposits

Your CAMP doesn’t have to be stationary and veterans will routinely relocate their CAMP to various deposits that are rich in the supplies they need. If you find yourself needing a lot of lead, feel free to relocate your CAMP to an area with places to mine.

Some resources like black titanium are often located in inconvenient places, and Scorchbeasts have a habit of ruining your day. Take some time to explore areas, ask around, and find the right area to meet your needs and this can solve your resource problems.

2 Set Up Trade Partnerships

If you can’t find a convenient spot and farming trips are becoming annoying then start thinking about a multiplayer solution. Odds are there are players in the game who are rich in a particular resource and looking for something else to trade for.

If you find someone hungry for nuclear materials for armor crafting, and you can use wood or some other resource they have a lot of, set up a trade with them! Build enough trust and reliability and you can have a lucrative friendship that benefits both of you for a long time.

1 Go Shopping

In the worst-case scenario, if farming, mining, and trading just aren’t cutting it then one thing you can do is track down vendors who are reliably stocked with what you need and make bulk purchases. This will take a lot of caps, but if you have deep enough pockets this can save you a ton of time and effort.

Spend some time researching the best vendors for your area and even feel free to relocate your CAMP closer to one. You can then spend your time doing something you enjoy and use the caps to gather the scrap you need.
