Fallout 76 has had a tumultuous history, but Bethesda has put in the work to take it from a deeply controversial entry in the Fallout franchise to a solid game filled with a steady stream of new content. Over the last four years, developers have addressed fan complaints, implemented fixes, and added entirely new features. Now, Bethesda has confirmed the existence of a five-year plan for Fallout 76, indicating that the game still has a lot of support ahead of it.

Given how much progress Fallout 76 has made recently, this news may suggest that the game will only continue to improve from here. Fans who were wondering if it was worth returning to Fallout 76 in 2022 may be inclined to take this announcement as a good sign.

A 2022 roadmap for Fallout 76 was recently released, showing fans what they can expect to see added to the game this year. According to a recent interview Bethesda had with AusGamers, there are two more roadmaps for the game currently in progress--one for the next three years and one for the next five years. Fallout 76 design director Mark Tucker reported that a lot of his time is currently spent planning out the future of this post-apocalyptic MMO.

It appears that the three-year plan is rather fleshed out and well understood by the developers, but the five-year plan is still being expanded. A lot of things have been added to the game in the past few years: NPCs with branching dialogue, the arrival of the Brotherhood of Steel, and even customizable, premium private servers. This suggests that the upcoming plans may include some major overhauls and new arrivals, which will likely draw on a mixture of existing Fallout features and entirely new features designed for Appalachia. However, not everything the developers have come up with in the last four years has ended up staying in Fallout 76, so it's possible that some of the upcoming changes and additions will flop as well.

Whatever the case, players can rest assured that Bethesda intends to continue updating Fallout 76 for at least the next five years. The game has been through a lot of changes, but it appears to be growing closer and closer to the image many players had of it before its disastrous launch. Odds are good that gamers everywhere will fall in love with Fallout all over again when the five-year plan is completed.

Fallout 76 is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
