With Fallout 76 right around the corner, Bethesda is already planning ahead for the next installment of the popular post-apocalyptic franchise. According to a recent interview with GameStar, Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5, as well as Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield will be single-player games. Howard went on to say that Bethesda wants each game to be their own thing, so Fallout 76 may be one of the only multiplayer-driven games from Bethesda.

While Fallout 5 was only briefly mentioned, Howard did talk at length about Fallout 76 and some of the design choices behind it. He discussed the new engine that was designed specifically for Fallout 76, which includes new render technology, new lighting, and a new landscape generation tool. The new engine was one of the talking points during Bethesda’s E3 2018 conference, which showed off the stunning weather tech and render distance in the Fallout 76 trailer. Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield will both receive new technological overhauls as well, according to Howard.

Howard went on to state that Bethesda is looking to improve upon almost every aspect of Fallout 4 for Fallout 76. Considering Fallout 76 is based on multiplayer plans from Fallout 4, this is not very surprising. Regardless, everything is receiving an update in some form, from quest tracking to hit detection, Bethesda is making sure Fallout 76 is a step in the right director for the franchise, even if it is such a departure from the series formula.

Howard closed out the interview talking about the changes to the quest system within Fallout 76, and how it will operate differently compared to its predecessors. Since Fallout 76 is totally online, it will not feature NPC’s and quest-givers in the traditional sense. Players will be able to get quests and objectives from robots, holotapes, and other sources.

It sounds like, while Fallout 76 is the main focus at Bethesda at the moment, they are already planning ahead for the next series of single-player focused games. Perhaps fans will learn more about what’s on the horizon for Bethesda after Fallout 76 hits the shelves.

Fallout 76 launches November 14, 2018, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
