Fallout 4 Unofficial Logo

Over the past month Bethesda fans were taken on a wild goose chase set up by the Survivor 2299 website, which featured a clock counting down to December 11th. Many took the site's aesthetic and themes as a sign that Fallout 4 would be getting a reveal announcement on that date or at the Spike VGX (where Bethesda previously revealed Fallout 3 and Skyrim), while others remained skeptical. A backwards and forwards ensued with the consensus about the site's legitimacy moving between 'real' and 'fake' almost daily.

Over a period of three weeks it was continually updated with morse code, secret messages and hidden coding leading many to pour over the website scrupulously for any hint at Fallout 4's immanent arrival. It was finally revealed last week that the site was in fact a fake and understandably, many the community felt cheated.

Although, instead of high tailing for the hills from the pitchfork and torches, the site's hoaxer has come public trying to provide answers to the Reddit community that spent so long scouring over his hoax. Firstly the hoaxer, DCHoaxer explained exactly why they started Survivor 2299 to begin with.

"I wanted to force Bethesda to reveal something during VGX/ on 12/11, and bring /r/Falloutcommunity together (for at least 3 weeks) Unfortunately, this plan Failed."

Fallout 4 Headed to Boston

One of the details that confused matters about the website early on was that Bethesda Softworks hadn't commented on the site with Reddit users saying that this pointed to the its legitimacy. It turns out that the company did in fact take action, reaching out to DCHoaxer directly, who confirmed that it was one of the reasons that they came clean about the website. When pressed to reveal what the company said to him, DCHoaxer was reluctant to divulge any further but answering a question later on, they said they didn't want to annoy "Bethesda at this time even more."

What about the timer on the website that was set to go off on 11th December? DCHoaxer explained that fans would've received a CGI trailer, which also explains the trailer audio that was uncovered. They stated multiple times that they had access to money to put the trailer together and that they will consider releasing it when the situation cools down.

While the Survivor 2299 website turned up a dead end, fans shouldn't lose hope over Fallout 4. A steady flow of rumors and hints at the game's production have teased the community for a while now, probably most notably when the voice actor of Three Dog actor hinted at the game's existence. The real questions at this point though are how active the project is, how far along it is in development and when it will get an announcement, all of which currently have no answer.

Do you think Fallout 4 is in development? When do you think we might hear about it? This E3 or maybe even later?
