Fallout 4 is going to get a next-gen upgrade in 2023, which will improve the game's performance and add more features across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. Bethesda is currently in the midst of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Fallout franchise, and it's done so by releasing new art featuring familiar characters, releasing fresh content for the online multiplayer Fallout 76 spin-off game, and more.

The last main series entry in the Fallout franchise was 2015's Fallout 4, which released to critical acclaim. While perhaps not as fondly remembered as Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4 still has a great deal of fans who have enjoyed exploring its open world, completing its DLC expansions, and otherwise searching every nook and cranny of the game. In 2023, Fallout 4 fans will have the opportunity to play the game in a whole new light.

The next-gen update for Fallout 4 will be available at an undetermined point next year. The update will add a performance mode to the game for players to choose between higher frame rates or higher resolution. Bethesda plans on squashing some of Fallout 4's lingering bugs with the update as well, though specific ones weren't named, and fans can also look forward to the incorporation of Creation Club content, ala the Skyrim Anniversary Edition that released last year. Details on specific Creation Club content coming to Fallout 4 with the next-gen update are unavailable at the time of this writing. Better yet, the Fallout 4 next-gen update will be available completely free of charge, so existing owners of the game can upgrade at no extra cost.

Fallout fans will have to wait until next year to learn more about what the game's next-gen update will entail. However, it should be pointed out that the Fallout 4 next-gen upgrade isn't the only new Fallout on the horizon. Bethesda's Todd Howard has confirmed that Fallout 5 will be the game the studio makes after it wraps up on development on The Elder Scrolls 6, so while fans may have to wait a decade or more to actually play it, they can still look forward to it releasing eventually.

Rumors indicate that there's even more Fallout content for fans to look forward to in the years ahead. If the rumors are to be believed, there's apparently been a push at Microsoft to have Obsidian make a Fallout: New Vegas sequel, but nothing concrete on that front has been confirmed at the time of this writing. Fans can revisit the classics, check out the new content that was recently added to Fallout 76, and look forward to playing the Fallout 4 next-gen update while they wait for more information on brand-new Fallout projects.

Fallout 4 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
