The Fallout 4 next-gen update might include some Fallout: New Vegas-themed content, as suggested by Bethesda's recent development activity. The next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4 was originally announced in October 2022 for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with the developer saying it's planning to release it sometime in 2023.

Bethesda previously revealed that this improved version of the hit 2015 RPG will introduce a performance mode for players who prefer higher frame rates over improved texture resolution, as well as a number of bug fixes. Finally, the potentially impactful next-gen update for Fallout 4 was confirmed to include bonus Creation Club content in the form of additional third-party mods.

In a more recent development, Bethesda added a "newvegas2" repository to the Steam version of Fallout 4 on April 4, according to SteamDB. Despite its name, it is extremely unlikely that the repo references an actual Fallout: New Vegas 2 game. A much more plausible explanation is that the repository hints at a Creation Club section dedicated to New Vegas-themed Fallout 4 mods which Bethesda plans to introduce with the incoming next-gen update.

The developer's decision to attach a "newvegas2" label to a new code branch presumably wasn't made in jest. Not least because SteamDB also reveals the existence of another relatively recent Fallout 4 repo called "beta2," which Bethesda created on March 14. Its moniker seems to suggest that the developer is simply adding a "2" to the name of any repo associated with the next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4.

Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim are the only two Bethesda games that have so far introduced Creation Club support. This storefront for paid mods might also be part of the studio's roadmap for its next game, although there's still no indication that Starfield will actually launch with Bethesda's Creation Club.

This newly surfaced hint that New Vegas-themed mods will be part of the Fallout 4 next-gen update suggests Bethesda remains very much aware of the 2010 game's cult following. However, a full-fledged sequel to Fallout: New Vegas is unlikely to be part of the studio's plans for the foreseeable future, with the developer repeatedly saying that its next project after Starfield will be The Elder Scrolls 6, followed by Fallout 5. Given how Bethesda's development cycles have been growing longer in recent times, the Fallout series might have to wait another decade for a new mainline game.

Fallout 4 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, whereas its next-gen update for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S is coming sometime in 2023.
