Since its release in 2015, Fallout 4 has been a site for the modding community to showcase a great deal of creativity, with "Capital Wasteland" primed to be one of the most ambitious of these projects until it was announced as cancelled in 2018. However, a recent post indicates that work on the mod, which looks to recreate the entirety of Fallout 3 within Fallout 4, is actually still ongoing.

On Wednesday, "Capital Wasteland" Project Lead NafNaf_95 provided an update suggesting that development did, in fact, not cease with the 2018 cancellation announcement. Indeed there may be hope for the massive Fallout 4 mod yet, as the post states that "a small but dedicated group of people from the original team have continued to slowly chip away at this gargantuan task."

Specifically, the "Capital Wasteland" team is said to be comprised of fewer than 10 people. This is certainly a small group of individuals to undertake such a task, and the post asks for the community's patience as a result, further noting that no one is being paid for their work on the project.

Regarding the cancellation announcement, this followed what the post describes as "the final nail in the coffin" when the team encountered a possible legal issue with the mod. That is, it was discovered that the plan to transplant Fallout 3's audio into Fallout 4 was something that simply could not be performed legally.

Corresponding with PC Gamer, NafNaf_95 explained that this issue is specifically due to the two games being built in different engines. This requires that the Fallout 3 audio be converted to a format that is compatible with Fallout 4, and herein lies the legal quandary.

To address this problem, the "Capital Wasteland" team has come up with a solution that is impressive in its scale: to re-voice all of the dialogue from Fallout 3. "This is a very big undertaking," Co-Lead HcGxGrill writes, "as there are approximately 45,000 voice lines in Fallout 3."

There has been no indication of when "Capital Wasteland" will be released, and this massive addition to an already significant project certainly suggests that it may be a long time coming. However, for those that are simply longing to play Fallout 3 in an updated engine, the confirmation that things are moving forward with the mod will be welcome.
