Mods are always fun to implement into games as they create a whole new experience. This is especially true for Fallout 3, which had a vast open-world set in Washington D.C. Despite the amount of content players could tackle in the base game, there were always people looking to add more to the classic.

It is important for those looking to change up how they play the game to look at all the best Fallout 3 mods that have come out.

20 Dynamic Weather

Mod by Xepha: Download.

Fallout 3 players know that the world has a weather system, but it isn't as seamless or deep as it could be. With the Dynamic Weather mod, the weather gets some major depth that makes the environment a bit more realistic.

Specifically, transitions between specific patterns are a lot more smooth as they switch from one event to another. The mod adds different kinds of storms such as rainstorms, lightning storms, and sandstorms amongst other things. Some assets from Skingrad's Enhanced Weather are also used in this add-on.

19 Vault 101 Revisited

Vault101 Revisited

Mod by KineticKat: Download.

Players are forced to leave Vault 101 and never return in the main storyline of Fallout 3. In the Vault 101 Revisited mod, players can return and complete quests from inside the vault, as the name suggests. There are four main quests within the vault, along with three side scavenger quests that are unmarked.

There is also some voice acting in this mod that is computer-generated. Players can access the mod after completing the quest "Trouble on the Homefront," and can enjoy what Vault 101 might've been like while they were away.

18 Tenpenny Tower Reborn

Mod by Clgseed: Download.

One of the most iconic locations in Fallout 3 is Tenpenny Tower. The settlement is the center of some quests in the game, making it a place that is frequented often. Because of this, there have been many Fallout 3 mods that have been made around it. That is how the mod compilation Tenpenny Tower Reborn comes in.

These Fallout 3 overhaul mods that, by themselves, would otherwise feature minor additions to the tower, but all of them together create a beefy experience. On top of some refurbishment of the location, there are some alternative endings that have been added to the tower's side quest along with some additional NPCs to interact with.

17 Alton, IL

Fallout 3 Mod AltonIL

Mod by Elijah Houck: Download.

Players may enjoy exploring Washington D.C., but it's always interesting to think about what's beyond the city's borders. With the Alton, IL mod, players can travel to a whole new city with a whole new set of quests to enjoy, which includes trying to find a way home by joining one of two factions at war.

It works similarly to Point Lookout in the sense that players can travel to it at any time, but it's easily twice the size of it. The project as a whole took two and a half years to complete and a team that included voice actors, resource creators, beta testers, and a composer.

16 Ultimate Perk Pack

Mod by TheFakeEmpire: Download.

Since Fallout 3 is an RPG, there are many layers to the systems players interact with in the game. For example, for every level the Lone Wanderer earns, they gain a special perk that will benefit them in the long run while going through the game's world.

One of the best Fallout 3 mods that have contributed to this is the Ultimate Perk Pack mod. This expands upon the number of perks that are possible to earn in the game. This includes earning the ability to breathe underwater to maximum resistance when holding an object. Keep in mind that some perks have negative consequences as well.

15 D.C. Interiors Project

Fallout 3 Mod DCInteriorProject

Mod by chuckSteel: Download.

Let's say a player is walking around town and finds a bunch of boarded-up buildings that they wish they could go into, but have no way to access them since they are essentially just there for looks. The D.C. Interiors Project brings many rooms behind previously impassable doors to life.

RELATED: The Best Fallout Perks

It allows players to explore the likes of Floyd's Barbershop, Majority Whip's Ice Cream, and many more buildings throughout the D.C. area. Many abandoned homes that were initially for aesthetics can also be opened up to the player by installing this mod.

14 Fellout

The graphical comparison between regular Fallout 3 and the Fellout mod

Mod by Hattix: Download.

If there is one color that can best describe Fallout 3, it is the color green. The world is filled with a green tint, making it seem like the nuclear blasts didn't happen a long time ago. With the Fellout mod, the most noticeable change it makes is adding a lot more color to the world while still keeping the post-apocalyptic vibes to it all.

The mod also overhauls the indoor lighting system and a lot of the green fog has been cleared. This add-on also adds the Atmospheric Sun Glare mod by LadyDeadlock, which is essential for the overall look of the environment.

13 Existence 2.0 Robot Radio

Fallout 3 Existance20RobotRaido

Mod by Macabre Productions: Download.

The Fallout series is famous for its music, rehashing a lot of the early 20th-century swing music into a 21st-century video game. It's hard to say no to more music in the game, so the mod Existence 2.0 Robot Radio is here to give players some more music while they run around.

The mod features 64 songs and 55 minutes of original broadcast material. There's a DJ for the station, a robot named JunK'et, and players can even go to the radio station to explore it and get an extra quest.

12 Fallout 3 Re-Animated

A look at a new shooting pose in the Fallout 3 Reanimated Mod

Mod by Alendor: Download.

Animation has evolved a lot between 2008 to 2021. Some players may enjoy the old-school feel of the animations in this game. However, one modder took it upon themselves to go in and tweak some of the animations in the game.

With Fallout 3 Re-Animated, around 90 different animations have been adjusted. These include gun-holding animations to just general idle loops. While the mod is no longer being worked on, bringing this mod to the game can help the characters in the game look a little sharper.

11 Real-Time Settler

Fallout 3 RealTimeSettler

Mod by Arcoolka & Ripvanwinkle111: Download.

Fallout 4 introduced the mechanics of crafting and demolishing buildings into the series, but a mod called Real-Time Settler gives players the option to use this mechanic in the previous installment.

This addition to the game gives the player the ability to build settlements and decorate them with furniture and trinkets. The player also is able to manufacture weapons and armor and sell them to bring in a profit. The fun part of this mod is being able to recruit almost any NPC to live with the player in their village.

10 Mothership Zeta Crew

Mothership Zeta in Fallout 3

Mod by Nylonathathep: Download.

Bethesda had its own set of add-ons it made for Fallout 3 that it made, the final of which was the Mothership Zeta DLC. All elements of the content take place on an alien mothership that the player has been abducted by.

If Fallout 3 fans have all of the DLC released by Bethesda, they should check out the Mothership Zeta Crew mod. This turns the individuals aboard the ship into their own faction and introduces new story points to experience. This large mod adds five unique missions, new armor, new weapons, and a lot more ship to explore.

9 Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch

Mod by Hairylegs222, RoyBatterian, and BenWah: Download.

One of the Fallout 3 essential mods to get when looking to change things up in the game, but not too much, is the Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch mod. Bethesda games have been known for having their lingering bugs and this mod goes out of its way to correct the mistakes that haven't been fixed in the base game.

However, that is not all. There is also a handful of cut content that was still in the game files but never made the actual game. The creators decided to sprinkle in the material that they felt could actually fit into the final product. While it doesn't solve all issues with the game, it makes a massive effort in trying to do so.

8 Underground Hideout

Fallout 3 UndergroundHideout Mod

Mod by Danthegeek: Download.

During post-apocalyptic times, it's always good to find a safe spot to gear up in order to head out into the unknown. With the Underground Hideout mod, a spot is created for the player on the southeastern end of the wasteland near Rivet City.

Players can get into the hideout through a quest that they can get by taking a note that's on the entryway. This isn't just a place to hide in though. The hideout is decked out with many amenities, including an armory and an item sorter. There are even some special weapons that aren't from the base game.

7 Flora Overhaul

Fallout 3 FloraOverhaul

Mod by Vurt: Download.

One of the best graphical mods out there for Fallout 3, Flora Overhaul provides four different versions of the mod to tailor the experience to what the player would like to see. There is the Forested version, which replaces many of the trees in the game with more luscious versions and makes the landscape more colorful in a general sense.

You can also opt for the Dead and Total Devastation versions, staying true to the bleak aesthetic of the apocalypse and making the dead trees larger. Then there's Lite, which adds some visual enhancements, but not too many for lower-end computers to handle.

6 Arefu Expanded

An overview shot of Arefu in Fallout 3

Mod by Azar: Download.

There is a small settlement in Fallout 3 called Arefu, which has only four houses that sit on top of a deteriorating bridge. It's nice to see these kinds of towns get a facelift, so that's where the Arefu Expanded mod comes in.

This reimagining of the settlement features 16 new characters and well over 600 lines of dialogue. There are multiple missions players can go through that could affect karma and also earn their own home. Those who like more puzzles and less combat will enjoy the story. Plus, there are new weapons and a radio channel unique to Arefu.

5 FOOK2

FOOK2 Fallout 3 Mod

Mod by the FOOK team: Download.

Many modders enjoy the idea of completely overhauling a game and making it into something fresh. With FOOK2, which is the second iteration of the Fallout Overhaul Kit, the game that players know as Fallout 3 is changed drastically.

The overview of the changes includes high-quality retextures of the entire game to make the game look newer. There are also a ton of new items, from food to weaponry. The NPCs are overhauled as well, with new textures and each faction having its own unique weapons. That's just the tip of the iceberg, too. This one really needs to be played firsthand to be appreciated in full.

4 Energy Visuals Enhanced (EVE)

Mod by weijiesen and Cipscis: Download.

As noted throughout this list, the best Fallout 3 mods tend to be ones that visually change the way players look at the game. How about a mod that does that with some of the coolest effects in the game and adds a bunch of cool weapons that cause those visual effects?

The Energy Visuals Enhanced (EVE) mod adds 32 different animations that play when getting "Critical Kills" using specific weaponry. Visual and sound effects include enhancements to explosions, lasers, plasma, robots, and more. There are also a bunch of new weapon variants to try as well that are an ode to older Fallout entries.

3 Mart's Mutant Mod

Fallout 3 MartsMutantMod

Mod by Martigen: Download.

The world of Fallout is already pretty grim with all the mutated creatures that were created by the nuclear blast. So how about more of them? Mart's Mutant Mod not only adds a ton of variation between each of the creatures players already interact with within the game, but it also adds a handful of new creatures that are original to the mod itself.

Some of these new critters include the Monstrous Dog, the Super Mutant Enforcers, the Enclave Deathclaw Alpha, and the Sesom's Iguanas.

2 A Note Easily Missed

"Hey Kids! Raphie the Robot is here! He has tons of swell stuff that he'd love to say to you. Why not hit the button on Ralphie's tummy and see what he's been up to lately?"

Mod by Puce Moose: Download.

What was life like before the nuclear meltdown changed the world forever? That is what A Note Easily Missed attempts to explore. This mod looks into the lives of people in the pre-disaster world from multiple perspectives and the gameplay strays from what players may be used to in Fallout 3.

The adventure focuses on exploration, having the player go through areas trying to find little details about the past. There are multiple areas to explore, new notes that have some voice acting, and quizzes that test the knowledge of what was learned in this adventure. It is one of the best mods for Fallout 3 for those who love learning about lore.

1 Fallout 3 Wanderer's Edition

Fallout3 Wanderers Edition Mod

Mod by the FWE team: Download.

Players seeking a more RPG-style experience out of their Fallout playthrough will love Fallout 3 Wanderer's Edition. The group of mods focuses on enhancing two elements of the game. One is speeding up the first-person shooting aspect of the game to add more of a challenge while also making combat-based more around the player's skill.

The other element is adding more RPG elements that allow the player to make choices that will directly impact their environment and their development. There are more than 50 individual mods included in this overhaul, and the result is beyond impressive.

Fallout 3 is available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
