Despite its age, Fallout 3 is still a popular as well as revered game. Like any great RPG, Fallout 3 gives the player a remarkable amount of freedom to make their own choices. One of the most important decisions a player must make occurs at the very start of the game. Players must ask themselves, just what kind of character do they want to be?

Outside of roleplaying, choosing a "build" will have a marked effect on how the gameplay is approached. The good news is that there is no right or wrong answer. There is a myriad of different ways Fallout 3 can be played. Players, however, can never go wrong with these archetypes as they venture through the wasteland.

Updated August 11, 2021 by Mark Hospodar: Even after thirteen years, the desire to revisit the nuclear carnage of Fallout 3 is still strong among fans. The roleplaying aspect stands, unsurprisingly, at the core of the game's experience. Although the options available may seem limited by today's standards, there's always a different way to play. Plenty of interesting archetypes exist that potentially allows the player to witness Fallout 3 in a completely different light. The freedom to be almost anything is one of the hallmarks of a great RPG. Despite its age, Fallout 3 is a timeless classic that can still deliver a few surprises for both new and old fans alike.

10 The Chem-Crazed Cannibal

Addicted To Chems In Fallout 3

When given the option, an evil playthrough tends to be a lot of fun in an RPG. As far as evil actions go, cannibalism is at the top of the list in Fallout 3. What's more dangerous than a cannibal? One that's hopped-up on illicit narcotics and wielding a hefty melee weapon to boot! These are the skills players interested in this build should tag:

  • Melee Weapons
  • Sneak
  • Repair

Obviously, the Cannibal perk at Level 12 is mandatory for this build. Other necessary perks include Little Leaguer, Chemist, and Ninja. The Strength attribute, along with a liberal supply of Psycho, Buffout, and Jet, is the priority. The idea is to hit hard and fast with one's melee weapon of choice with the aid of chems. Then, consume to regain health!

9 The Mad Scientist

A Scientist From Fallout 3

For players looking to follow in the footsteps of dear old dad, a scientist build is a viable option. Proficiency with technology can really come in handy while traversing the Captial Wasteland, both in terms of exploration and combat. Here are the three essential skills for this archetype:

  • Energy Weapons
  • Medicine
  • Science

Useful perks include Daddy's Little Boy/Girl, Swift Learner, Educated, Robotics Expert, Cyborg, and Computer Whiz. The key attribute is Intelligence, which can be set to 10 to make the protagonist an instant genius. Robotic enemies, in particular, won't know what hit them.

8 The Explosives Expert

Player Firing A Fat Man In Fallout 3

The myriad weapons that can go "boom" in Fallout 3 are extensive. Specializing in explosive weaponry is a bit tricky since blowing yourself up is quite easy. Players need to be cognizant of their surroundings in confined spaces to avoid an embarrassing death. The skills to tag are:

  • Explosives
  • Big Guns
  • Repair

Fans focusing on this kind of weaponry will want to snag Bloody Mess, Toughness, Demolition Expert, Size Matters, and Pyromaniac. Setting Strength and Perception to above-average values is recommended for this build. Utilize weapons such as the Fat Man when outdoors, while taking advantage of mines and fire-based weaponry indoors.

7 The Cowboy Gunslinger

Cowboy Gunslinger From Fallout 3

The Fallout universe is a lot like the Wild West from American history. Law and order is nearly nonexistent, and people eke out a living while relying on nobody but themselves for protection. Playing as a Clint Eastwood-esque gunslinger looking to clean up the Wasteland is definitely a viable archetype. Necessary skills include:

  • Small Guns
  • Barter
  • Speech

First, players need to look the part of a gunslinger. A cowboy hat and duster will do nicely. For a sidearm, nothing beats a trusty .32 caliber pistol. A lever-action rifle, available with the Point Lookout DLC, is also highly recommended. Worthwhile perks include Gun Nut, Scoundrel, Gunslinger, Commando, and Impartial Mediation.

6 The Pure Pugilist

Player Using A Power Fist From Fallout 3

Some players believe guns and energy weapons are overrated and feel they would rather let their fists do the talking. In that case, playing as the Pure Pugilist means getting up close and personal with the enemy. It's a risky build, but definitely one of the more fun and rewarding ones. Tag these skills:

  • Unarmed
  • Medicine
  • Lockpick

Since the player will be utilizing their brawn, it's important to spend plenty of points on the Endurance and Luck attributes. The Iron Fist perk should be obtained at the player's earliest convenience, as it increases unarmed damage by +5 with each rank. Obviously, increasing the Unarmed stat with every level-up is vital. Players looking to be on the safe side may want to consider heavy armor for that extra bit of protection. The Power Fist is a useful weapon for this build too.

5 The Backstabbing Sneak

Sneak Attack From Fallout 3

Similar to the previous entry, this archetype is all about getting close to one's enemies. Instead of knocking them senseless though, this build is more about dispatching unsuspecting enemies with a melee weapon. Alternatively, in place of a melee weapon, a silenced pistol can get the job done as well. The three tag skills should include:

  • Sneak
  • Small Guns
  • Melee Weapons

For attributes, focus on Perception, Agility, and Luck. Excellent perk choices consist of Silent Running, Thief, Finesse, Mister Sandman, Light Step, and Infiltrator. Light armor or clothing is preferred to remain stealthy. As far as weapons go, a silenced 10mm Pistol or bladed knife are excellent choices.

4 The Sniper Elite

Sniper Kill From Fallout 3

Getting too close to an enemy is assuredly risky in Fallout 3. Why tangle directly with a Super Mutant anyway? Well-aimed sniper shots can be immensely deadly in the right circumstances. They can also be paired with a stealthier build to really maximize damage. Essential skills include:

  • Small Guns
  • Sneak
  • Repair

For this build, players will want to prioritize the Agility and Luck attributes. Needless to say, a rifle equipped with a scope is mandatory. The Sniper and Commando perks are also helpful when attempting to aim with VATS. Additionally, Gun Nut, Finesse, Action Boy/Girl, and Concentrated Fire can come in handy as well.

3 The Energy Weapons Specialist

Player Using Energy Rifle From Fallout 3

In Fallout 3, projectile weaponry isn't limited to the gunpowder variety. Energy weapons, particularly those that utilize plasma, can shred through certain enemies like tissue paper. Specializing in all things related to energy weapons is a great way to deal massive damage in a short period of time. The tag skills should consist of:

  • Energy Weapons
  • Big Guns
  • Science

Perception and Endurance are the attributes on which to focus. Helpful perks include Scrounger, Size Matters, Strong Back, and Cyborg. As far as weapons are concerned, carry a mix of plasma and laser to be more flexible.

2 The Smooth Talker

Dialogue From Fallout 3

Fallout 3 doesn't have to be all about violence. Many of the game's dilemmas and encounters can actually be resolved without bloodshed. However, the player character is going to have to be quite persuasive when dealing with NPCs. Putting that silver tongue to good use, though, can be massively beneficial in the right circumstances. Make sure to tag:

  • Speech
  • Barter
  • Small Guns (for a backup!)

Players are going to want to pump plenty of attribute points into Charisma right off the bat (and may even max it out). Essential perks include Black Widow/Lady Killer, Child at Heart, Scoundrel, Impartial Mediation, Animal Friend, and Mysterious Stranger for when things get a little too hairy!

1 The Indestructible Behemoth

Power Armor & Minigun From Fallout 3

If any of these other builds sound too puny, perhaps the Indestructible Behemoth sounds compelling. This archetype requires little finesse or dexterity. Pure, brute strength is the key to success with this playstyle. Being the last man standing on the battlefield is the core idea behind this build. The tag skills should be made up of:

  • Big Guns
  • Explosives
  • Energy Weapons

For starters, players should focus on Strength and Endurance. There's no need to be an aspiring brain surgeon with this archetype. Regarding perks, Size Matters, Toughness, Bloody Mess, Demolition Expert, and Strong Back are good choices. Lastly, players should deck themselves out in as much heavy armor as possible to withstand even the most withering attacks.
