Mediatonic's Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has been a rousing success, passing a two million player milestone on Steam while being offered for free through PlayStation Plus. According to publisher Devolver Digital, over 60 million characters have fallen in the week since Fall Guys launched, resulting in some hilarious — and often heartbreaking — recordings of lost matches online.
On Sunday, YouTuber and Twitch streamer Onyx, who goes by LightSkinYagami, uploaded a video of a run through Fall Guys' difficult Slimeclimb minigame, one in which their character is poised to be the second bean qualified to move to the next round. However, right before he reaches the finish line, another lingering player runs out and tosses him over the edge like Mufasa in The Lion King.
Fall Guys is unique because of its focus on short, obstacle course platforming reminiscent of game shows like Wipeout and MXC, meaning some Fall Guys losses are the result of bad luck due to environmental hazards. However, it is also a battle royale, and as Onyx discovered some players have taken to those genre conventions by doing whatever they can to make sure they are one of the last people standing.
Though there are plenty of tragic losses uploaded online, the sheer amount of players who have bought into Fall Guys means there are also plenty of exciting wins. At least 1.5 million crowns have been grabbed since the game released, according to Devolver Digital, and tomorrow a major update will add Jump Showdown and more into Fall Guys.
Though this unique take on the battle royale genre has been a huge success, there is the possibility it could expand to more players in the future. Mediatonic has confirmed that Fall Guys Xbox and Switch ports could happen if demand is high enough, and judging by the game's popularity thus far it's hard to say this would be outside the realm of possibility.
One interesting part of the game's success is seeing how players have latched onto its simple character customization. So far Fall Guys has skins crossing over with popular games like Half-Life and Hotline Miami, and Konami's UK branch mocked up its own design for a Metal Gear Solid tie-in. No doubt the possibilities for different skins will grow alongside the game, and fans should expect to see lot more videos uploaded by players like Onyx.
