Mediatonic hit it out of the park with Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, a battle royale that asks players to navigate obstacle courses and complete Mario Party-style minigames. Fall Guys is the most downloaded PlayStation Plus game of all time, having been offered as a free title in August, and that success begets longevity. Gamescom 2020's Opening Night Live offered players a sneak peek  of a medieval-themed Fall Guys Season 2, which launches in October.

Geoff Keighley, host of Opening Night Live and creator of The Game Awards, teased Gamescom's Fall Guys Season 2 reveal last week and hyped it up throughout the two-hour show. Lead Designer Joe Walsh said the team at Mediatonic is still putting the finishing touches on development, but Season 2 will include new costumes and rounds; which is good considering many players have begun optimizing even tricky minigames like Slime Climb. Other collectibles like emotes will also be released, according to the sneak peek's official description on YouTube.

Concept art depicting primarily purple-and-green maps were shown throughout the sneak peek video. Gameplay could be seen for returning rounds like Hoopsie Daisy with new layouts, as well as entirely unique experiences with players having to complete tasks like moving blocks to create staircases so they can advance. The new costumes added into Fall Guys fit its upcoming medieval aesthetic, from knights and wizards to dragons and vikings.

Fall Guys' success in its first month is also evident through social media, where the game's official Twitter account has shared everything from custom costume designs for its jelly bean characters to an a cappella beatbox rendition of Fall Guys' main theme song. The possibility for crossovers is immense given Fall Guys has costumes based on Valve's Half-Life and Portal, and developers like Yoko Taro have expressed an interest in the battle royale.

In fact, Fall Guys has become so popular that screenwriter Gary Whitta and Twitch streamer Kate Stark are planning a Fall Guys talk show, following the Animal Crossing: New Horizons show that has hosted guests like Brie Larson, Kevin Smith, and Cory Barlog. The second episode airing tomorrow will feature Walsh and Oliver Hindle from Mediatonic.

According to Keighley, "If one game has defined the summer of 2020, it's Fall Guys." Hopefully the development team will become better equipped to tackle Fall Guys' problem with hackers as they gain more experience with the release of new content, starting with Season 2 in October.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is now available on PC and PlayStation 4.
