Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a major hit, less than a week after launch. The game's partnership with PlayStation to offer it as a free PlayStation Plus title has proven a brilliant marketing decision. Over 1.5 million downloads came through on PS4 in the game's first 24 hours. But it's not just a success on PlayStation, as it's now clear that Fall Guys is also Devolver Digital's most successful launch on Steam, too.

Following Fall Guys' server maintenance in preparation for the weekend, the player count spiked massively. For over two hours Fall Guys was around 123,000 concurrent players. Its since lowed to around 100,000, but that's still a remarkable number for a cartoony party game.

What makes that number especially meaningful, however, is that it's Devolver Digital's biggest launch number yet. The indie game publisher has had many success stories, including Hotline Miami, Minit, and the more recent entries in the Serious Sam franchise. But those games haven't had the kind of immediate success on Steam that Fall Guys has managed. In fact, the closest in comparison is SCUM, which managed just 68,000 concurrent players.

The Steam player count is especially meaningful, too. 1.5 million free downloads is likely to drive DLC, absolutely, but every Steam sale comes with a $20 price tag. That said, Devolver Digital would probably trade those sales numbers for free downloads. Those kinds of downloads give the game longevity, which means more DLC sales. But at this point, it's hard to imagine Devolver Digital and Mediatonic doing anything other than celebrating and squashing server issues.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is available now on PC and PS4.
