After spending some time focusing on video games, a new Gundam anime is coming to our screens from Sunrise. This latest installment will be called Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.

This will be the first new installment in anime form from the Gundam franchise in more than seven years, so fans of the historic mecha series are understandably anxious to see what the series will be about. What can Gundam fans expect from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury?

As noted above, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is the first installment to come from the Gundam franchise. Previously the most recent Gundam series was Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, which was a favorite among fans of the franchise for its stark realism and heavy themes presented. The franchise famously got started in 1979 with Mobile Suit Gundam. The series’ cult following eventually turned into a nationwide icon, and multiple anime, video games, and (of course) action figures have been released throughout the years.

In America, the franchise took years to catch viewers’ attention, and it finally did when Gundam Wing premiered on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block. Since then, various Gundam series have aired on Cartoon Network and other streaming networks, and the video games have become staples of GameStop’s all over America.

The Story

According to the studio:

A.S. (Ad Stella) 122: An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

For the moment, that sounds like a typical story for a Gundam series. The wildcard in all this is in the title, as The Witch from Mercury suggests that there may be a supernatural element to the series.

This would be an interesting development for the franchise, as the series has typically been based in reality, with politics and real-world conflicts taking center stage. While installments like G Gundam had introduced SOME magical elements, they were few and far between, so if Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury ends up having supernatural elements it will be quite the shake-up for the franchise.

The Characters

In one-way Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury WILL be a first for the series is with the cast! The main protagonist will be a second-year student in a piloting program who will ultimately be the driver behind the Gundam in the series. This will be the first time a female character will feature as the main protagonist in any Gundam anime.

She will also be joined by her friend named Miorine Rembran, who has a rebellious attitude toward her father. Press materials have also hinted that there will be a protagonist for the heroines to face off against, but so far Sunrise is keeping details on who that might be close to their chest, so viewers will have to watch the show to find out who this will be.
