Ever since the Disney-Fox merger that occurred in 2019, fans have been waiting to see their favorite Marvel characters from the Twentieth Century Fox films make their MCU debut, especially the X-Men. When The Falcon and The Winter Soldier came out with an episode that took place in Madripoor, the legendary mutant hub, it seemed that the studio was gearing up for an X-Men cameo, possibly from Wolverine. Of course, that didn't end up happening, but a new fan theory suggests that another mutant may have been hiding in the show the entire time, and the points are rather convincing.

According to @mutantages on TikTok, the shapeshifting villain Mystique may have been hiding in plain sight throughout The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He suggests that she was disguised as Sharon Carter all along, and there are a couple of possible clues that would support such a wild theory. For starters, Marvel had released a Madripoor-themed website ahead of the series debut and it featured several references to X-Men characters, including Mystique. When fans made note of them, Marvel quickly removed them from the website, which seemed suspicious.

Then, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier itself, fans caught on to more subtle hints at Mystique's presence, including a graffiti wall of skulls that could have been a nod to Mystique's comic book outfit. The theory also points to a scene where Sharon Carter was bathed in blue light, a noticeably different fighting style for the series that was very reminiscent of Mystique's, and a post-credits scene that showed her doing a "Mystique walk."

Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique

Of course, these are highly speculative and nothing has been officially confirmed, but they would explain why Sharon Carter's character seemed different in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier compared to Captain America: Civil War. Should Sharon Carter actually be Mystique, it would give Marvel Studios the perfect way to introduce a new X-Men storyline in the MCU, one that could involve other mutants from the Twentieth Century Fox properties.

Earlier this year, Evan Peters' Quicksilver, another X-Men character, made a cameo in WandaVision and it also got fans buzzing. Ultimately, the dream is to see Marvel's biggest on-screen teams come together in an epic adventure. While Kevin Feige has assured fans that Marvel is working on bringing the X-Men to the MCU, it's still unclear when it will actually happen. For now, fans will just have to take his word and continue waiting patiently for their grand arrival.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is now streaming on Disney Plus.
