Although the manga and anime series have officially come to an end, fans of Hiro Mashima’s creation Fairy Tail still have a video game adaptation to look forward to, and new artwork for the game has recently been revealed.

The official Fairy Tail Twitter page unveiled the first two illustrations for the “Guild Box” collector’s edition that will be available upon the game’s Japanese launch in 2020. The artwork provides a closer look at the game’s cover art and also gives a sneak peek at the cloth poster that will be included in the collector’s edition, which shows Erza, Lucy, and Wendy frolicking at the beach.

Written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima, Fairy Tail was originally released as a serialized manga in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 2008 to 2017. The adventures of the wizard Natsu Dragneel and his five companions quickly grew in popularity and an anime version of the series premiered in 2009 and officially ended on September 29, 2019.

Fairy Tail is set in the magical Kingdom of Fiore, where a number of magical guilds battle one another to become the strongest in the land. In the upcoming game, developed by Gust Co. Ltd. and published by Koei Tecmo, a major battle has taken place and the Fairy Tail guild has inexplicably disappeared for seven years and, when they return, the Fairy Tail guild members find that they have lost their standing as one of the supreme guilds of Fiore and must fight their way back to the top.

The game takes place about halfway through the timeline of the anime Fairy Tail series. However, even players who have not followed the anime or read the manga can pick up the game and understand what is going on. Tidbits scattered throughout the game will uncover pieces of the story, explain how the guild came to be, and disclose how the relationships between the different guild members have developed over the years.

The Fairy Tail game is a classic turn-based JRPG with standard role-playing game mechanics such as item collection for magic and equipment upgrades, world map battle encounters, and town exploration. The town of Magnolia from the anime and manga series can be explored for the first time fully in 3D and there will be other moments of fan service recreated directly from the manga and anime.

Fairy Tail will be available on PC, PS4, and Switch on March 19, 2020.
