One of the most highly-anticipated indie games currently in development now has a release date. Fae Tactics, a turn-based tactical game with grid-based maps, charmed the gaming industry when it was announced in 2018. It reappeared just this past month at the PC Gaming Show promising a summer launch. And now Fae Tactics has an official release date, as developer Endlessfluff Games confirmed a July 31 launch on Friday.

The Final Fantasy Tactics influence is strong in Fae Tactics. The game features a classic isometric turn-based combat and gorgeous pixel art. Though whether Fae Tactics trends more towards the often brutal themes and plot points of the original Final Fantasy Tactics or the more charming and curious tone of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance remains to be seen.

That doesn't mean that Fae Tactics isn't ambitious in its own right, however. Fae Tactics also employs a unique menu-less system of turn-based tactical gameplay. It also employs a sort of Pokemon-esque collection system in which creatures of the Fae can be defeated in battle and then recruited.

Published by Humble, Fae Tactics promises a massive, 60-hour story filled with drama and intrigue. Fae Tactics' subtitle, which is notably hard to notice on the game's Steam profile, is The Girl Who Destroyed the World. There's very clearly much more to Fae Tactics than its cutesy demeanor implies. Players can find out for themselves very soon.

Fae Tactics releases July 31 on PC, with a Switch release to follow.
