At the start of November, a new Nvidia GeForce Now leak introduced potential release dates for all kinds of big games. Everything from Avowed to Perfect Dark to The Elder Scrolls 6 shows up in the leak, giving fans potential release dates for some crucial games. Alongside these other potential Xbox Series X stars, Fable got a potential release date for late 2023. As with every leak, fans have to take this information with a grain of salt. It's entirely possible that the information in the leak is incorrect, whether it's flat-out falsified or simply out of date. Playground Games and Microsoft might have a very different release date in mind for the Fable reboot.

However, a comment from a Playground Games developer might lend some credibility to the latest GeForce Now leak. Playground Games lead engineer Tom Gaulton recently said on Twitter that he'd been happily working on Fable for the last four years. Before Gaulton put out this tweet, Fable fans had very little information on just how far along Fable was. This claim could suggest that Playground has actually done a ton of groundwork on its Fable game already and that Playground is just biding its time. If that's the case, Fable could easily release before the end of 2023.

Fable's Potential Development Time

Gaulton's tweet is simple. Alongside a picture of a certificate from Playground Games thanking him for another year of work, Gaulton says that he's completed a fourth year working on Fable and expresses his anticipation for the game. It's not a detailed message, but it confirms a lot of valuable information about Fable. Rumors about a franchise reboot first cropped up in 2018 when Playground started hiring for an RPG. This tweet seemingly confirms that Playground Games started work on Fable even before that, working on its entry since around 2017. The result is concrete evidence that Fable already has a ton of development time under its belt.

That's extremely important information in the context of the leaked release date for Fable. The leak suggests it'll release in two years. If development had barely begun in 2020, then that might seem pretty slim for a big-budget Xbox Game Studios RPG. Thanks to Gaulton's tweet, however, fans have solid evidence that Playground has been working hard on Fable for a long time. With that knowledge in mind, a late 2023 release date not only seems completely within reason, but it almost seems surprisingly far off. Maybe Fable will release even sooner than that, opening up more space between itself and The Elder Scrolls 6.

Fable's potential release date definitely seems plausible now. It's unlikely that the leaked date is exactly right, but a release anywhere in the second half of 2023 makes perfect sense. Still, fans probably shouldn't expect a release date much sooner than that. Playground Games has hired new help for Fable well within 2021, suggesting the game still has some major development to go through. What's more, if the leaks about a late 2022 Avowed release are true, then it'd be best for Fable and Avowed to give each other breathing room by releasing about a year apart. Even with these cautions in mind, though, it's great to hear how much time Playground has put into Fable so far.

Fable is in Good Hands

Some Fable fans were skeptical when Playground Games revealed that it's in charge of the fantasy RPG franchise now. Playground is known pretty exclusively for Forza Horizon, after all. Hard evidence that Playground has been working on Fable for four years ought to quiet those fears, though. Clearly, Playground is aware of its lack of RPG knowledge, motivating it to work slowly and diligently on Fable, rather than rushing ahead in order to establish Fable as part of its brand. With all that time spent in mind, 2023 seems like a perfectly comfortable release date for this classic franchise's revival.
