Expeditions: Rome is the latest in the cult-classic tactical RPG series, currently being worked upon by Logic Artists and published by THQ Nordic. The Expeditions games feature richly realized historical settings, and the latest entry is no exception.

After exploring the Spanish Age of Exploration and the Vikings' attempt to colonize North America, the dev has shifted its focus towards the Late Republic period of Rome. This, along with more resources at the helm, have allowed the developer to magnify the scale of the experience and fans would be pleased to know the time it takes to beat the game. Game Rant recently spoke with Logic Artists' creative director Jonas Waever about how invested this experience is.

Expeditions: Rome - How Long To Beat?

Sometimes, turn-based tactical RPGs are a slow-burn, but they are often full of content. Expeditions: Rome is deeply rooted within tradition for most of its RPG systems, and thus the amount of time players would require to complete a playthrough greatly depends upon the familiarity with the games. When asked on the matter, Waever said,

This is always a difficult question to answer for an RPG with so much optional content and varying difficulty based on genre familiarity. At a guess, 40 hours for an average playthrough sounds about right?

While the time required to beat is on par with what players expect from a juicy RPG, it's surprising to think how far the franchise has come. The first entry, Expeditions: Conquistador, was partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign, with a reportedly small team of 8-10 developers working on it. Logic Artists has expanded greatly and has recently opened up a new studio in Istanbul which housed Expeditions: Rome's art team.

Additionally, Expeditions: Rome will feature a ton of side-content across three of its campaigns, which can certainly add up a lot to a playthrough. While the scope of the side-content isn't known yet, there's a decent chance that investing in it might extend an average playthrough to around 60 hours. However, the best part about Expeditions: Rome is its doubling down on player choice, and how the choices impact the story.

Logic Artists also showed off an extended preview build of the game in a press event, where a single choice during the first campaign had a profound impact on one of the later quests. Even the choice of the protagonist's gender can hold huge implications, as the behavior of NPCs changes accordingly. So, players who wish to see all that Expeditions: Rome has to offer will have to do multiple playthroughs, which can greatly extend the playtime.

Expeditions: Rome is set to release in 2021 for PC.
