Make no mistake, if players have a favorite character in Evil Dead: The Game, they should probably stick with it. Of course, they'll need to adjust to the needs of the team on occasion, but generally speaking, every survivor is capable, on some level, of fulfilling the roles they are assigned.

RELATED: Evil Dead The Game: Best Demon Warlord Build

However, they are all quite different, and in these differences emerge some strengths and weaknesses. On occasion, the strengths are powerful enough to make up for any weaknesses. For other survivors, their weaknesses are so glaring that they can single-handedly be the reason the team goes down in any given Evil Dead: The Game match.

Updated on December 4th, 2022 by Hodey Johns: This list needed to be updated for two major reasons. Unlike some live service games that get a tweak here or there, this game has had some movies overhauled entirely. Some characters play dramatically better or worse than before as a result. Also, two new survivors, Lia and David Allen, have entered the fray with some DLC and needed to be ranked as well. Team compositions and personal experience may make players feel differently about where the survivors rank on this list. but looking at some game statistics, it's clear that some survivors have a tendency to land at the top of the charts while others are struggling to find a win at all.

15 Scotty

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Scotty In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Thunder Thrust

When activated, this explosive special move damages all enemies in the surrounding area.

Collateral Damage

Your heavy melee attacks inflict additional damage to nearby enemies.

Exposure Therapy

Partially reduces your fear levels with each enemy you kill.

Weapon Master: Lumberjack Axe

The lumberjack axe has a faster attack speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

Scotty is just horribly optimized and even ideal warrior skills can't save him. He's incentivized to use heavy attacks, making him more vulnerable to damage from nearby deadites. This is only negative if he uses a lumberjack axe, but that's not the right weapon to be used with predominantly heavy attacks. Taking more damage and doing less damage not only makes him a bad warrior but also makes him the worst survivor around.

14 David Allen

Evil Dead The Game David Allen Customization Screen

Ability

Effect

Beacon of Hope

Reduces fear for you and any teammates within the flame's aura. Evil units within the aura require an increased amount of infernal energy to possess.

Shemp's Pop

When David drinks a Shemp's, he and all nearby survivors take less damage for a limited time.

Weapon Master: Nail Gun

The nail gun has a faster reload speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

Boosted Beacon

Increases the range of Beacon of Hope's aura and the infernal energy cost to maintain possession within the aura. Attacking a possessed evil unit within the aura reduces the demon's infernal energy.

A support hero with no extra healing capabilities is a tough sell. Players may want to replay this horror game again, but if they want to support, try a different survivor. David Allen is good against fear-based assailants, but that's usually a role that the leaders do better in.

When playing against an inexperienced demon user, David can potentially have some success if the user doesn't know that David is good against possessed units. But an experienced gamer knows they can just switch tactics. Without a valid healer, the damage dealt will be all the more powerful against David's squad.

13 Kelly Maxwell

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Kelly Maxwell In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Slipshot

When activated, you dodge without using stamina and your ranged attacks cause bleeding damage to your target for a short period.

Weapon Master: Meat Hammer

The meat hammer has a faster attack speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

Countershot

Your next ranged attack after a successful dodge inflicts bleeding damage on your target for a short time.

Battle Frenzy

Your melee damage increases the longer you are in sustained combat.

Here is Kelly, a hunter, who is incentivized to do melee damage and rotate it with her ranged capabilities. Excusing the fact that she's not taking advantage of her class bonuses by doing this, she also needs way more help than this to be an effective melee combatant. With the right hunter skills, she can become competent in melee combat, especially in longer fights, but she still won't be as good as an average warrior, plus she's taking up the hunter spot on the team, crippling their badly-needed ranged capabilities.

12 Ash Williams (Evil Dead 2)

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Ash (Evil Dead 2) In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Exorcist

Activating this ability exorcises the demon from any possessed survivor or basic unit. If used on a possessed or elite boss unit, the ability drains some infernal energy from the demon.

Treasure Hunter

See supply crates through walls at close range.

I'm The Guy With The Double-Barrel

Start the match with the double-barrel.

Weapon Master: Double Barrel

The double-barrel has a faster attack speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

If it weren't for his active ability, Ash Williams (Evil Dead 2) would likely be at the bottom of this list. The active ability can knock enemy demons out of their possessions quicker by draining their infernal energy, but the team would probably prefer raw damage from their hunter. And, bad news, he's not good on that front. He's essentially locked into using a double-barrel, which is not anywhere close to as good as the standard shotgun.

11 Mia Allen

Evil Dead The Game Mia Allen Customization Screen

Ability

Effect

Uncontrollable

When activated, Mia cannot be possessed but fear level increases and cannot be decreased. However, when the ability deactivates, her fear level drops according to how many evil units she killed while it was active.

Fear Leads To Anger

When Mia's fear level reaches a specific threshold, her damage potential increases as her fear level rises. The more scared she is, the more damage she deals.

Blood Rain

A percentage of Mia's heavy attack damage is converted to prolonged bleeding damage.

Weapon Master: Machete

The machete has a faster attack speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

When it comes to great games with a B-Movie setting, this one is there and new DLC character Mia Allen contributes to the theme. However, she's got some large drawbacks. She's incentivized to get her fear meter high. To avoid getting possessed, she requires an active ability to stop it. But the kicker is that she'll be almost assuredly possessed afterward unless she killed loads of enemies during the sequence. That means, on a good team, the hunter will outkill her and get her possessed unless they back off on damage.

10 Pablo Simon Bolivar

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Pablo In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Gift From El Brujo Especial

Activate this skill to begin creating an amulet and then drop it to the ground on completion.

Infernal Camouflage

Demons are no longer able to detect you using Demon Vision. When using an amulet, nearby survivors go undetected by the Demon Vision for a limited time.

Legacy Of El Brujo

Begin the match with an additional amulet. Also increases the maximum amount of amulets you can carry. When Pablo uses an amulet, nearby survivors recover part of their shield bar.

Shamanic Protection

Your shield bar will gradually recover over time until you have at least one full bar.

Pablo is the lowest of the support heroes due to his over-reliance on amulet healing. The others have massive healing on shorter cooldowns while Pablo is stuck giving out amulets on massive two-minute cooldowns. It's better than no support hero and he's definitely more of a difference-maker than the survivors lower down on this list, but everybody on the team will be wishing the player using him had selected a better option.

RELATED: Evil Dead The Game: Best Demon Puppeteer Build

Pablo has been slightly buffed but it's hard to tell; he's gained powers that transfer to his team when he uses the amulet himself. But that's part of the issue, he has to be the one using the amulets and not the teammate who might be in need.

9 Lord Arthur

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Lord Arthur In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

The Lord's Wrath

When activated, this ability increases the damage inflicted by your melee attacks and those of your nearby teammates, in addition to reducing fear levels; if Lord Arthur has a sword, he inflicts extra damage.

Weapon Master: Melee Attacks

You and all teammates within the aura's radius deal increased damage with melee attacks; start the match with a sword.

Weapon Master: Sword

The sword has a faster attack speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

Fuel The Fire

If you perform a finisher while The Lord's Wrath is active, the ability lasts longer.

Overall, Lord Arthur is a good friend if the team is full of melee combatants. He's a leader who boosts this damage. Optimize the leader skills and he'll be alright so long as the rest of the team understands they need to drop any expectations for their ranged attackers.

Lord Arthur has risen on this list since the game's release; his skills now increase all melee damage instead of just heavy attacks. However, he's still somewhat capped by his effectiveness with exclusively melee weapons and, specifically, a sword.

8 Ash Williams (Army Of Darkness)

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Ash Williams (Army Of Darkness) In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Wiseman's Potion

When activated, this ability will grant you health regeneration, fear reduction, increased damage dealing, and reduction of damage received.

Shield Blast

Each time your shield loses a bar, it triggers an explosion, damaging nearby enemies.

Finish Strong

After Ash kills an enemy with a finisher he recovers part of his shield bar.

Weapon Master: Chainsaw

The chainsaw has a faster attack speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

When it comes to solo play, Ash Williams (Army Of Darkness) would find himself much higher on this list. He's got some built-in healing and support, buying himself some freedom from the reliance on support characters. He does need to get lucky and find some amulets for a sustained run and pray for a good chainsaw, but with a solid team around him, he'll do fine up front.

7 Annie Knowby

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Annie Knowby In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Hit 'Em Where It Hurts

When activated, this skill increases ranged damage from Annie and any teammates who are near her.

Howitzer

You and all teammates within this aura's effect radius deal more damage with ranged weapons.

Haymaker

Attacks by you and your teammates within this aura's effect radius cause more damage to the balance bar of basic evil units.

Slugger

Attacks by you and your teammates within this aura's effect radius cause more damage to the balance bar of elite and boss evil units.

Leaders act as secondary support and damage survivors and Annie plays the part well. She's strictly all about ranged damage, so teams will need to coordinate, but when they do, they'll be glad that she makes it worth the coordination. She's not entirely useless for melee attackers, who will be happy to use their finishers more often when she's in the squad.

6 Amanda Fisher

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Amanda In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Ammo For Days

When activated, this ability allows you to temporarily fire your ranged weapons without expending any ammunition.

Trusty Sidearm

Start the match with a pistol.

Weapon Master: Pistol

The pistol has a faster reload speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

Accuracy Counts

Damage dealt by your ranged weapons increases with each consecutive hit.

Despite a heavy reliance on pistols, Amanda finds herself in an above-average position on this list. She can shoot for a brief time without using ammunition, a handy tool when supplies run low in longer battles. She really shines against boss summons as her consecutive hits increase her damage. A marksman who never misses will find her damage threshold is non-existent, they just have to be careful not to lose the buff with a miss.

5 Henry The Red

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Henry The Red In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Unstoppable

Activating this ability temporarily prevents damage to health or shield.

Shields Up

Start the match with an additional shield bar.

Rebound

If you have any shield, reflects a percentage of the damage you receive back onto your attacker.

Battle Hardened

Increases maximum health and shield bar length.

Henry the Red is the best warrior in the game due to his unique design of being the only character capable of weathering hits and returning damage to his opponents. He's also free of the restraints that would make him rely on a single melee weapon; he's encouraged to use the best available and hop into combat. Demons will hate his nearly-limitless survivability.

RELATED: Evil Dead The Game: Best Demon Necromancer Build

Henry the Red had a slight nerf in that he now requires a shield to reflect damage. He's still the best warrior and tank, but players will have to be cautious to make sure that extra shield doesn't fall.

4 Ash Williams (Ash Vs Evil Dead)

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Ash Williams (Ash Vs Evil Dead) In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Show Up And Blow Up

Active skill that generates an explosion, damaging enemies' balance bars.

El Jefe

An aura that affects all survivors within range, increasing their fear resistance and the damage they inflict.

Old Friend

Start the match with a chainsaw.

El Jefe Grande

Enhances your aura's effects when you perform a finisher or dismember an enemy.

When it comes to ranking the leaders, Ash Williams (Ash Vs Evil Dead) has a solid spot at the top of his class. The others force teams to choose between melee or ranged damage while Ash gives a boost to all sources. He helps support his team by reducing fear and has a nice incentive to play on the frontlines to help his melee companions.

3 Cheryl Williams

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Cheryl In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Healing Touch

Activate this ability to create a healing zone for you and your teammates.

Cola Coaster

Carry more Shemp's Cola and start the match with an extra one in your inventory.

Contact Courage

Drinking a Shemp's Cola partially reduces your fear and the fear of nearby teammates.

Contact Healing

When you drink a Shemp's Cola, nearby teammates will also gain an increased amount of health.

Cheryl is the most classic of all the support units in that she's a bona fide healer. Her active ability has a moderate cooldown but it is good enough to take most teams to full health every minute and a half, greatly reducing the effectiveness of demons trying to win by a war of attrition. Of course, supports heal their teams primarily with Shemp's Colas, and nobody does it better than Cheryl.

2 Ed Getley

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Ed In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

It's A Trap

When activated, this ability grants the use of a unique flashlight that allows you to detect and temporarily disarm demon traps.

Enduring Light

Increases the battery life of your flashlight.

Weapon Master: Crossbows

The crossbow has a faster reload speed and deals increased health, balance bar, and dismemberment damage.

The Collector

Increases the chance that defeated enemies will drop items; also improves the chance of finding crates of a higher rarity.

The flashlight bonuses are a bit quirky, but they do serve to completely erase the chance demons have of successfully springing a trap on the team. That's not the end of his support assistance as a hunter; The Collector keeps the team full on Shemp's Colas, ammo, and amulets while also giving his team better weapons. He's admittedly support-heavy but deals more than enough damage to make him the best hunter around.

1 Ash Williams (The Evil Dead)

Evil Dead The Game Playing As Ash (The Evil Dead) In Multiplayer

Ability

Effect

Reassuring Presence

When activated, this ability reduces fear levels for you and nearby teammates.

Alternative Healing

Successful heavy melee attacks partially restore health for you and nearby teammates.

Marked Target: Damage

Headshots will mark a target for a limited time; during this period, follow up shots from you or your teammates deal additional damage.

Marked Target: Healing

Headshots will mark a target for a limited time; during this period, follow up shots from you or your teammates restore a percentage of the damage back to you as health.

Finally, Ash Williams (The Evil Dead) is not just the best support survivor, he's the best character in the game. Being great with him does require some situational awareness. His heavy melee attacks heal as do his headshots. Lifesteal means he can heal without any Shemp's Colas and without relying on long cooldowns. His active ability removes fear as a factor in the game. By removing one avenue for a demon victory and severely pushing back against the other, even a bad team will find an easy win with Ash supporting them.

He was already ranked as the best survivor when the game debuted and, incredibly, he's been buffed. It used to be that teammates needed to perform successive headshots, keeping this support hero from wanting to get any killing blows. Now, he's free to do this killing on his own and still receive the benefits.

Evil Dead: The Game was released on May 13th, 2022, and is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
