The Guardians of the Galaxy's first appearance was in in 1969's comic by the same name. This group was much different than Star-Lord and his team, as they were from the 31st century and would mainly join up during crossovers whenever a convenient portal would open up to the 21st century. The Guardians of the Galaxy most familiar to us today were first introduced in 2008, and would go on to inspire the current Marvel movie adaptations. Since the newer Star-Lord and crew first hit the comics, developers have tried to recreate the team's magic in a game format.

There were a few games featuring individual characters before the movie was released and further launched the group into popularity. This included a 2011 game called Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, which gave young fans a family-friendly way to experience new heroes, including Star-Lord. Another example being Marvel: Avengers Alliance, which was a turn-based game on Facebook where players would play as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and team up with up to two members of the 166 character roster from the Marvel universe. From then players are put through waves of enemies, each stronger than the last. It won the Best Social Game at the G4TV Video Game Awards.

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon

A mobile game, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon featured the team we know today as they embark on yet another adventure to save the universe. In the game, players would be able to control the entire team at once, dragging and clicking on enemies for each Guardian to take out. The game is a tie-in to the movie that promises an original story with a customizable team of guardians at the player's disposal. The game was reviewed as about average compared to other mobile games on the market at that time.

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series

Telltale has a long history of games that play akin to interactive movies rather than conventional gaming experiences. Near the end of the original studio's life it focused on showcasing other developer's IPs. Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series was its own iteration of Marvel's famous franchise. The game sees Star-Lord and his team helping Nova Corps face off against Thanos. After defeating him, they embark on a quest inspired by the Eternity Forge, and end up paying a hefty price.

Title card for Marvel Powers United VR

VR has seen a rise in popularity in the last decade, and no one has been hungrier for an experiences than superhero fans. Marvel delivered for fans big time with Marvel Powers United VR, which allowed players to step into the shoes or power armor of their favorite heroes. This VR game for Marvel on the Oculus Store let players play three characters from the Guardians of the Galaxy: Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, and Gamora.

While these games have featured the Guardians of the Galaxy in some form, and there are others, there hasn't really been a game so far that has captured the light-hearted magic of an unlikely team coming together like the first movie managed to accomplish so well. With rumors of a new Guardians of the Galaxy game by Eidos Montreal, hopefully fans can see their favorite galaxy restored faithfully by the Deus Ex developer.
