As time moves forward, server shutdowns, online services ending, and overall decommissioning of older games are going to happen. There are several games trapped on older hardware, which is why there has been a rallying cry for video game preservation in recent years. Many are quite upset that things they own digitally, such as video game DLC, no longer work under certain conditions either.
Still, it’s no surprise that Ubisoft has announced several online services will be decommissioned beginning on September 1, 2022. There are a total of 15 games joining its decommissioned list then, including 5 Assassin’s Creed games. Many in the community weren’t happy with this announcement, but it should be noted that most of these games are only impacted on older consoles. Furthermore, remasters such as Assassin’s Creed 3 are not impacted, just the original release.
Many of these games should still be in good shape with these conditions, but it’s still an oddly timed announcement by Ubisoft, at least as far as Assassin’s Creed goes. The community is celebrating the franchise's 15th anniversary, which will culminate in some event in September. While these celebrations are ongoing through then, Ubisoft has not only announced this but also the end of the Assassin’s Creed Mentors Guild program.
It may be understandable, but the timing isn’t the greatest. Still, the future is the future, and there are several Assassin’s Creed projects reportedly in the works, including AC Rift, Nexus, Infinity, and perhaps even an AC1 remake. But for those who are curious, here are the games impacted, the platforms impacted, and the exact consequences of this decommissioning.

While saying goodbye to the past, it’s often important to welcome the future. The aforementioned titles could very well be the franchise’s future. AC Rift is reportedly a smaller-scale, more classic title featuring Basim and set in Baghdad, AC Nexus is a VR project, AC Infinity is a live-service game, and an AC1 remake is just as it sounds. Of these four, the latter one is the most dubious, but fans may learn more about one or more of these projects in September.
