Daybreak Games, responsible for titles such as EverQuest, The Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies, DC Universe Online, and H1Z1, is hiring a Combat Designer. The job posting states that the ideal candidate “will have previous experience developing massively multiplayer roleplaying games.”

Other than the game’s MMO nature, nothing is known concerning what game the new Combat Designer could be working on. However, considering the previous MMO Everquest Next was canceled, it is almost certainly not that. Recently, Daybreak Games acquired Dungeons and Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online, leading some players to think its new game could be a follow-up to one of those acquisitions.

It seems likely that the new game will be highly familiar to players, considering one of the essential duties for the Combat Designer is to “create fun, AAA quality designs in a fast-paced, iterative environment while utilizing a hugely popular IP.”  This detail and the fact that the renewed license for Lord of the Rings Online expires with 2017 makes a new follow-up to this title seem possible.

With the popularity of the Battle Royale mode in online games, one person jokingly suggested the game was “Everquest Battle Royale.” This seems highly unlikely, but considering PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was made with Unreal Engine 4 (the job posting listed experience with this engine as a plus), some form of battle royale isn’t out of the question.

The job posting also stated the following as a plus: “current-gen console (PS4, Xbox One) development experience” and “experience in an early development environment.” These details suggest two things: the game may be available on current-gen consoles as well as PC, and that the project is still early on in development.

Whether this game is a follow-up to Lord of the Rings Online or some other Daybreak Games property, some eventual news will be highly anticipated by MMO fans. Hopefully, however, this title does not go the way of EverQuest Next.
