The bestie blowout that took season 2 of HBO's Euphoria by the horns and the ponytail is now being rehashed as it enters another battle — a fight for the top spot at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
The fight between Maddie (played by Alexa Demie) and Cassie (played by Sydney Sweeney) left fans stunned and was one of the most talked-about moments from the series season 2 finale. Now, the showdown is getting even more recognition as it is nominated for Best Fight at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
The fight is one of five in the category and happens to be the only nominee from a television series. The Euphoria girls stand beside four other nominees, which are all from action-adventure movies and Marvel Studios superhero films. The other nominees in the running to take home the Golden Popcorn trophy on Sunday, June 5th are Free-Guy's final battle between Dude and Guy, Black Widow's smackdown between Natasha Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson) and the mind-controlled Widows, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings bus street fight, and the three generations of Spider-Men as they battle the bad guys from each franchise from Spider-Man: No Way Home.
For the past three years, all the Best Fight at the MTV Movie & TV Awards winners have been female battles. In 2021, WandaVision's Scarlet Witch and Agatha Harkness took home the top spot, with Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman taking the Golden Popcorn trophy for the years prior. The popular HBO teen drama has received a total of six nominations, almost being the most nominated piece of media at the show, beat out by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was nominated a total of seven times.
The battle between Cassie and Maddie, who were once the best of friends in Euphoria season 1, transpired because Cassie started seeing Maddie's ex-boyfriend Nate Jacobs behind her besties' back. As Maddie continued to confide in Cassie about her heartbreak over her split with Nate, Cassie pretended to care while the whole time she was falling in love with Nate. As Maddie grieves the loss of her first love and her best friend, her rage begins to engulf her, leading to the epic finale episode fight, where Maddie finally gave Cassie a taste of her own medicine.
Although the girls don’t have spider-webs that shoot out of their bodies, the power of the ten rings, and aren’t professionally trained assassins (although some may argue Maddie's sneak attack says otherwise), it's an iconic teenage girl backstabber moment boiling over. Euphoria's girl fight is definitely a contender within the category, not because it's a fiery city-destroying war but because fans can relate to it in a way they can't relate to the superhero stuff. It’s real, it’s raw, and it's something that many go through on a day-to-day basis. And that might just be enough for HBO's Euphoria to take home the Golden Popcorn Award at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
